Yvonne Shirley Durben, 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on October 11, 2015, at The Homestead of Rochester.
She was born on December 4, 1922, in Preston, MN, to Mildred and Archie Staplecamp. She attended school in Preston and graduated in 1940. During WWII, she was employed by Douglas Aircraft Company, in Santa Monica, CA. After the war, she returned to Preston and began working at Mayo Clinic. On September 4, 1946, she married Frank Durben, of Stacyville, IA. They were married in Rochester, at Saint John’s Catholic Church. In 1947, they moved to Dodge Center, MN, where they owned and operated Durben and Funk Fairway Foods Grocery Store. Frank and Yvonne loved boating, fishing, playing cards, dancing to Big Band music, and traveling. They vacationed in northern MN for many years.
After Frank’s death in 1996, Yvonne moved from Dodge Center to Rochester. She lived at the Real Life Cooperative, where she met many wonderful friends. In May of 2014, she moved to The Homestead of Rochester, where she lived until her death. She loved spending time with her daughters and their families and with friends. She was an avid MN Twins, Vikings, and Gopher’s fan. She rarely missed watching and cheering on her teams on TV. She enjoyed shopping trips with her daughters and playing Gin Rummy and 500 with family and friends. She especially loved spending time at the cabin with her family.
Yvonne was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church of Dodge Center, and she was a member of Pax Christi Catholic Church in Rochester.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her loving husband, Frank, her parents, a brother, an infant brother, a son-in-law, and an infant great-granddaughter.
Yvonne is survived by her four daughters, who were the loves of her life: Mary (Dick) Hines of Rochester, Bonnie Titus of Carmel, CA, Judy (Craig) Wendland of Rochester and Deb (Tom) Ratelle of Edina, MN. Her grandchildren: Mike (Sara) Jensen, Renee (Tom) Redalen, Patrick Jensen, Allyson (Jake) Holler, Chris (Becky) Wendland, Ben Borofka, and John (Michele) Ratelle. Condolences
The family of Yvonne S. Durben has received the following condolences.
I'm sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She is just as beautiful as I remember her from our days in Dodge Center. Miriam
I was honored and it was a privilege to have ministered to Yvonne. I met her during my Dodge Center (1994) days and we have stayed in touch ever since. We use to do lunch regularly when I would come to Rochester. What a Dear Lady. I mean that. We had wonderful talks about God, missing Frank, and longing to leave this life and be forever with him in Heaven. She always wanted to know how it was going in my new assignments and if I still loved the priestly ministry. She cared for me as a mother, wanting to know how my vacations were. I even walked some of the same places as did her and Frank in their younger years. Now through the grace of God, eternal life has been granted. Be assured family she now watches over you and awaits you as Frank awaited her. I will miss her greatly. She was always good to me and her pictures captures the essence of how I will always remember her. Blessings Family,
Father James J. Seitz
Our condolences to all the children, Yvonne and Frank were friends and bowling partners for many years. We will donate money to the Dodge Center Legion in memory of Yvonne!
Our sympathy to all the Durben family at the loss of Yvonne. May she have joined the love of her life, Frank, and rest in eternal happiness with him. I had foot surgery within this week so I'll not be able to say "farewell" to her tomorrow with you, but want you to know our thoughts and sympathy are with you. May God bless all of you.
