Willoan C. Merrill

Willoan Clair “Nonie” Merrill, 94, of Rochester died peacefully at her home on June 23, 2018.

Nonie was born February 29, 1924 in Duluth, MN. She was the youngest of six children to William and Hannah Monahan.

She married John Anderson Merrill on April 28, 1948. She moved to Rochester with her daughter during WWII to live with her sister while John was in the service. After John returned, they bought their present home where they raised six children, Judy, Colleen (Michael), Kit, Brigh (Dale), Sean (Julie), and Jim (Kelli). She has enjoyed her home for over 70 years.

She is the grandmother to nine, great-grandmother to eight, and great-great-grandmother to three.

Nonie worked for Libby’s. She was also an owner and operator of Merrill Guest House.

She enjoyed traveling in their air stream, square dancing, sewing, and antiques. Once retired, Nonie and John spent their winters in Pharr, Texas.

Nonie is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, daughter, and a great-grandchild.

Nonie will be laid to rest with Johnny at Fort Snelling. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 28th at St. Francis Catholic Church with Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A lunch at Whistle Binkies on the Lake will follow the service.

Condolences

The family of Willoan C. Merrill has received the following condolences.

I am so sorry to learn of Aunt Nonie's death. Her sister (my mother), Joan, became very close in mom's last several years. We often got together in the 1990's and of course, I recall many happy times as a child when our families had summer picnics and winter sledding parties together. Nonie was always a cheerful, energetic and outgoing person. I loved her very much and send my heartfelt condolences to Judy, Colleen, Kit, Brigh, Jamie and Sean and the entire family. Hugs to all. Cousin Loretta

I just learned of Aunt Nonie's passing late this afternoon.  Please accept my sympathies. I have probably the fewest memories but her house was always a great one.  I especially loved hearing my older siblings tell stories about sledding there.  Peace and blessings to all of you at this time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole Merrill family. Our two families spent many great weekends camping so many years ago. The "folks"are probably having a great reunion together once again.
