Wayne Marx

Alert, inquisitive, wonderfully engaging, and prayerful well into his final hours, Marshall “Wayne” Marx, 90 and long-time resident of Rochester, died Friday morning (Oct 11).

Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday (Oct 15) in the chapel at the Madonna Towers Residence (4001 19th Ave. NW) with a reception to follow to honor and celebrate his life.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.  Memorials to the Madonna Towers employee appreciation fund are preferred in honor of their compassionate and loving care.

Marx is remembered as an adventurer, pilot, fisherman, father of six, grandfather, and forever devoted to his spouse, Helen Keane Marx, who died in May 1989. To those who knew him he was feisty, engaging, ironic and especially well known for the magnificent lawns he manicured from 1962 until 2001 when he took residence at Madonna Towers. His enduring faith and devotion were vital and important to him from birth to his final hour.

Wayne was born on February 17, 1923 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He  attended DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis. His remarkable adventures began his senior year 1940, with travel and work adventures on the West Coast, Montana, northern Minnesota, and Alaska before returning to Minneapolis where he was a movie theater manager.

In April 1945, he married the love of his life Helen Keane who preceded him in death in May, 1989. He bought and owned movie theaters in Crosby-Ironton and North Branch learned to fly, bought an airplane and fished with friends and family. In the early 1950s he sold the theaters and moved to Detroit Lakes where he began his career as a salesman. In 1961 the Marx family moved to Rochester, where he was a top performer for ROHAC0, a Minneapolis-based plumbing and heating supply from which he retired in 1988. He moved to Madonna Towers in 2001, where he was especially blessed by the special care and love of his youngest daughter Pauline and enjoyed the companionship of special friend Zoanne Oliphant.

He is survived also by his brother Tom and by sons and daughters: Patrick Marx, Jane Ramey and Jean Marx, Matt Marx, Tim Marx, and Pauline all of whom graduated from Rochester Lourdes High School, and numerous grandchildren and great-grand-children.

Macken Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  Online condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com

Condolences

The family of Wayne Marx has received the following condolences.

Dear Children of Wayne, I was saddened to hear of your Dad's recent passing...Perhaps its more poignant because we lost our Dad last March..I remember your Dad and your Mom well. Sometimes "the Lourdes girls" (our little group with Jean & Jane) would get together before a game @ your house or would use your home as a gathering spot for a touch football game or some kind of shenanigans.  I remember them as  warm and funny and welcoming.  My mother sent me his obit yesterday...so its bringing back old memories of earlier years...Thinking of you all. Lynn

My thoughts and prayers are with you Pauline and your family.  So sorry to read of your loss.  I remember when Pauline used to speak fondly of her father at work; and it sounds like he had a very interesting and full life.  That's all any of us can hope for.

Wayne and Helen lived across the street from my folks. They made sure to watch out for my mom after my father passed away. In the later years, Wayne called me whenever he noticed something potentially troublesome. I am forever grateful. What fantastic neighbors! Wayne's lawn was always a joy to see. It was magnificent indeed! My condolences to the Marx family and God bless.

Wayne was an incredible man.  He was like a father to me.  Such great wit and wisdom he possessed, and I loved his stories.  I will never forget the wonderful memories I had of Wayne, and will always treasure the time I got to spend with him throughout the years.  Rest in peace, Wayne, and may eternity in Heaven with your beloved wife, Helen, be wonderful.  I will miss you, Wayne, so very much.  See you on the other side some day, Wayne!  God Bless!

Wayne was a good neighbor and wonderful friend to us.  We spent many, many happy hours with him and Helen.  Bob and Wayne fished together on numerous occasions, and always managed to bring home a few fish, but mostly they enjoyed each other's company. Wayne had a sharp wit as well as an immaculate lawn.  We will pray for the repose of his soul.

Although I never met Wayne Marx, by knowing his son Tim I have a great sense of Wayne, since children are a good report card on their parents.  Tim and the family are in my prayers, and I genuinely look forward to meeting Wayne one good day when it is my turn!  Peace, Terrie
