Val T. Stevens

Val Thomas Stevens passed away at age 87 at Aviva/Riverbend Assisted Living on January 29, 2026.

Val was born on July 5, 1938. He claimed they canceled the fireworks that year on the 4th and had them on his birthday (it just so happened to be raining on the 4th that year). He was the son of Elsie and Ralph Stevens.

Val graduated from Lourdes Hight School in Rochester in 1955. He married Mary O’Brien, and together they had 6 children, Joseph, Michael, Gerald (Punky), Tamara, Maryann, and Kristi. He joined the Navy July 24, 1956, and was honorably discharged July 22, 1960. Val helped his parents at Blickle’s Jewelry, which they owned. He was a “jack of a trades.” He was a carpet layer, plumber, electrician, and could build just about anything. He was also an expert at being able to make a shorty story very long! Val joined the police department around 1965 and retired in 1996. He loved his job and always said he would not sell a day of it, or the Navy for $100! He enjoyed hunting with the infamous “Shady Bunch,” trapping, fishing, and building things.

Val is survived by his long-time companion, and friend, Kathy. His 6 children, 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild, and 2 nephews, Ralph and Sam Ovland.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sandra Overland.

The Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Spring of 2026. Please check back for service details.

We would like to share a special thank you to the staff at Aviva/Riverbend Assisted Living for all their wonderful care and time.

Condolences

The family of Val T. Stevens has received the following condolences.

I knew Val for a short time but I grew to love him in that time! He is missed so much and I am grateful I was able to care for him! He was such a hoot to have around and I’ll miss his smile!

We were so sorry to hear that Val had passed. Val’s Grandma Bertha, Vieno Kutsi, and my mom Martha Haavisto were sisters. I have fond memories of years past when my dad Bill Haavisto was a member of that northern deer hunting crew along with Val, Ralph, Art, Wes, and others. Val & Ralph stayed at my parents’ house during hunting season. There were evenings around the dinner table when Val would be telling stories, but he’d stop when he remembered I was sitting there. I guess at the time I was too young to hear those details. ;)  Both Val & my dad had very distinctive laughs, and I picture them in Heaven together now laughing alongside other loved ones.

Our deepest sympathy to you all. 🙏🏻❤️

I’m glad I got to get to know you better in the final years. Rest in piece.

My sympathy to all the members of Val's Family.  Worked with Val from time to time when I was with the FBI here in Rochester, Minnesota.  A good man.  God Bless.

So very sorry for your loss! Remembering all the wonderful times we had visiting Val and Kathy at their Wabasha lake home! Loved his stories! Our hearts go out to Kathy and all of his family! He will be missed by many!❤️🙏 love Jerry and Sally
