Tracy “Trace” Macken

Tracy Allen Macken, age 51, passed away unexpectedly on December 29, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus following a medical emergency.

Trace was born on February 27, 1964 in Rochester to Stephen and Jennifer (Winters) Macken. He graduated from Mayo High School in 1982. He began working for Mayo Clinic Rochester at the age of 16 and was employed there at the time of his passing. In 1988 he married Dawn Jensen in Rochester. They were later divorced. Together, they raised three amazing sons. Trace loved his family, spending countless hours at his sons’ hockey and baseball games. He was a self-proclaimed speed enthusiast, who enjoyed every type of racing especially getting behind the wheel of his go-kart.

He is survived by his three sons Derrick (Lindsay), Jason, and Aaron, and their mother (Trace’s long-time friend) Dawn Macken, all of Rochester, his girlfriend Jennie Stankey of Pine Island, his mother Jennifer Winters of Elk Horn, Iowa, his sister Kim (Jay) Fiek of Rochester, his grandmother Beverly Donaldson of Rochester, and numerous extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his father Stephen, and his grandfather James Macken.

A Funeral Service for Trace will be held at 10:30AM on Monday, January 4, 2016 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Mark Schwartz. Visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 4:00pm on Sunday, January 3, 2016 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home along with one hour prior to the service.

Kim, Jenny, and family, may all the great memories you have of Trace carry you through this big loss. Although I hadn't seen him in many years, reading all the condolences people have written, remind me of his easy-going nature. Sending you big hugs. May God bless you & comfort you.

I worked with Trace at St. Marys and was surprised at the news.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all the staff who enjoyed his smile, easy going attitude and a true worker among workers.  He will be missed.  We could use a lot more people like him in this world.

My deepest condolences. Trace was such a great guy. He gave me my first ever job and was willing to rehire me when I graduated college and couldn't find a job anywhere else. Always very cordial and I feel like I lost a friend. Will be thinking of him in the days months and years to follow. I'm so very sorry.

I am very sorry and extremely sad to hear about Tracy passing . My condolences to the Macken family. Went to Northrup with Tracy as well played hockey against him . Will really miss him.

So sorry for your loss. Trace lived next door to us for the past couple of years and was a great neighbor. We will keep an eye on the house and if we can do anything to help please don't hesitate to ask. Take care, Linda

im so sorry for your loss.   Trace was one of my favorite bosses when I worked in Dietary at St Mary's years ago.  He will be missed!

I was speechless to learn of Tracy's passing.  He was FAR too young with SO much more life to live.  Tracy and I worked in Main Kitchen together at St. Marys and he always made it wildly fun!  He had an amazingly dry and sarcastic sense of humor and he made the work day bearable!  I will miss his one-of-a-kind mischievous smile.  My thoughts and prayers are with you Dawn, boys, & family.  Please accept my deepest condolences.  Tammy

We are so very, very sorry to hear about Trace's passing. He was a great man and yes, he and Dawn, raised three amazing young men. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Jim, Jenny an Ryne Dusso and Devin and Haylee Schultz

Trace and I worked together as cooks early on in our careers in the main kitchen at St. Mary's for a number of years. We had some great times together that generated so many lasting memories and some recipes that were not on the general menu. Our boys played ball together in little league and when they got to High school, they were on the varsity baseball team together. We always talked at the hockey rink as well, he was always so proud of his boys and I am glad he got to see them play and be successful. Trace will be surely missed, when you think about his smile and sense of humor, well, there was no one like him, he was one of a kind !!
