Thomas Michael Polt

Thomas Michael Polt, 68, lost his short-lived hard-fought battle with cancer on Monday, October 19, 2020 with his family by his side.

Tom was born on August 18, 1952 to Mary Ruth (Burns) and Francis Polt in Binghamton, New York, the youngest of three children. In 1956 he moved with his family to Rochester, Minnesota when his father was transferred here with IBM. Tom graduated from John Marshall High School in 1970 and was a proud member of the 1969 John Marshall State Basketball Champions. He earned his Bachelor’s in Economics and Business Administration from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa in 1974. He then went on to attend Creighton University School of Law in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated with his J.D. in 1977.

In July 1983 he met the love of his life Beverley (Oakes) Manguson. They were united in marriage on January 14, 1984. Bev brought two young boys, Dustin and Ryan, to the marriage whom Tom accepted with open arms. Tom and Bev had two more sons, Michael and Gregory.

Tom spent 28 years working in telecommunication and mortgage banking and 45 years as a personal business tax consultant and preparer. He had many clients, most of which he considered friends.

Sports played an important part in Tom’s life. He enjoyed coaching the boys in both basketball and baseball; he never missed a game. Many hours and miles were logged traveling to various Minnesota towns and states for games and tournaments. Toms favorite saying “We’re All Family” became a chant of his coached teams and he meant it! Tom was always proud of his boys! After the boys grew up Tom enjoyed following his grandchildren in their sports ventures and always had a little coaching piece to help them out. In his later years he took up umping youth baseball which he really enjoyed and never understood why he had not started doing this earlier in his life.

Tom and Bev enjoyed traveling especially to warm destinations with white sand beaches and blue waters. Tom also enjoyed the family’s yearly trip up north to the cabin and reacquainting each year with their up north family, Theresa and Scott, and all the adventures and mishaps.

Tom is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beverley (Oakes) Polt; four sons, MichaelPolt, Gregory (Kenzie) Polt, Ryan (Carrie) Manguson and Dustin (Tabitha) Manguson; eight grandchildren, Kynlee Kay, Morgan, Paige, Noah, Alexandra, William, Addison and Aiden; and one special four legged friend, Lizzy Lou.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Mary Ruth Polt; two sisters, Patricia Polt and Francis Bryant; brother-in-law, Addison Bryant; mother-in-law, Tillie Oakes; one grandchild; and two four legged friends, Dutchese and Princess.

The family would like to thank Joan DePoppe and Evin Lantz for their help with Tom’s business. They would also like to thank Dr. Pro, and all the doctors and nurses of the Mayo Clinic Palliative Care and Hospice Team for the loving care they gave Tom. A special thank you to all our family and friends who offered prayers and comforting thoughts through this difficult time.

A visitation for Tom will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2020 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, Minnesota.

Memorials are preferred to the John Marshall Boys Basketball Program.

Condolences

The family of Thomas Michael Polt has received the following condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss. Tom was such a great guy. I’ll miss seeing you guys sitting on the deck together and enjoying lots of sun while sitting on a floatie with music playing from the beach. But most of all, I’ll miss and never forget his unmistakeable joyous and infectious laugh! Hugs to you all.

I knew him for a while, for 10 years we were neighbors. He truly was the best person in the neighborhood, he was pure hearted. He was loved by everyone in the neighborhood. Although we’re immigrants in this country he made us feel like we were at home. He always smiled and waved whenever we would pass, even though there was nothing there forcing him to. We miss him already. We send our sympathy, may he forever rest in peace. He will be missed.

Dear Bev and family,

We are so sorry to hear of Tom's passing.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time.

                    Our deepest sympathy.

Bev and Boys,

We are so saddening to hear of Tom’s passing. He prepared our taxes for so many years. He was a good man.

lucky are those who knew him

So sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. Tom and I spent a lot of time together as kids, playing pinball at his house and exploring Rochester on our bikes. Then I remember the day he pulled into my driveway in his super sweet Road Runner when we were in high school. Tom and I played on several baseball teams together, he was extremely competitive and always our best pitcher. Lots of road trips together ... on team buses or in Fran’s car. Good memories. My sincere condolences to his family.  -Steve Erickson

So very sorry for your loss!  Tom was the best baseball coach ever. He always took so much time with my son and made him the player he ended up to be. Mike....you were on his team (Guy Andrist).

Guy and I will hold you all in our Prayers!!!

I will never forget all the laughs and advice that Tom would give us riding around in the car going to practices and tournaments. Tom waa great guy and was always down to have a good laugh. He will be missed but always remembered. Hope they have an open spot on the bench for a new coach in Heaven!! rest in peace big guy

My deepest condolences to Lt. Ryan Manguson and his families.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Tom.  I played with Tom on 1969 and 1970 JM basketball team.  Although we lost contact after school I remember him as a great teammate.  May God's comfort and fond memories carry you through this difficult.  Matthew 11:28-30

To Tom's Family,

I was one of Tom's many school friends.  He was a favorite friend and frequent tormentor. His teasing was non-stop and always fun. I am sorry to hear he is gone so soon.  I wish you all the very best in this hard time.  Fill your hearts and minds with your favorite memories and pictures of him and may grief soon find no more room there.
