Thomas A. Phillips

Thomas A. Phillips, Rochester, MN age 57, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 16, 2012.

Tom was born in Birmingham, England, the youngest of seven children. His parents, Mary Ann and Joseph Peter were both Irish and kept many of the traditions of the old country.

Tom completed a degree in Biochemistry at the University of London’s Royal Holloway College. Later he obtained a Masters degree in Business Administration – Marketing at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico.  Besides a short-lived job at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, where he met his wife of 31 years, Alma Adrover. Tom worked most of his life for Perkin Elmer in positions of increasing responsibility while they lived in Puerto Rico. His job required him to travel all over the Caribbean, a task that both thrilled and annoyed him.

Tom suffered and survived many health issues including a kidney and pancreas transplant in 1994 which brought him to Mayo Clinic. It was also his health that led the couple to move to Rochester in 1999, where they have lived ever since.

Tom loved life. His sense of humor was famous; dry, witty and English to his very core. He fought incessantly and courageously against all odds. His faith in God and his love for Alma carried him through the hardest times. He passed away peacefully at his home, in Alma’s arms. He will live in her heart forever.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Alma, his beautiful cats Rosie and Henry, his sisters Eileen Del Buono (Portland, Oregon), Bernadette Johnston (Birmingham, England), his brother Michael Phillips (Brisbane, Australia), his sister in law, Ana D. Adrover (Yauco, Puerto Rico), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in his death by his parents Mary Ann and Peter, and his siblings Patrick, John and Margaret.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 5:00 PM at the Macken Funeral Home River Park Chapel on Saturday, July 21, 2012 with the Rev. Paul E. Nelson officiating.  There will be a visitation starting at 4:00 pm on Saturday at the Macken Funeral Home River Park Chapel.

Condolences

The family of Thomas A. Phillips has received the following condolences.

Yes, I dad do something fun. I went simwming at Wet n'Wild water park and talked to you while I was on the way with a bunch of kids in the back of the pickup with Abby, who went with me too. I did a pretty good job with the backstroke. I think the kids are about to beat me at simwming, so I hope I can hold up a little longer. I remember I didn't do such a good job when Darla was at Ft. Coob Lake, but an old indian helped us out, and I gave hime all the watermelons I had. I'm still growing tomatoes, green beans, squash and cucumbers. I hope I don't have to reward anybody with melones (cantaloupes) or sandias (watermelons), because they don't grow too good in El Paso, although I trying my luck again at pumpkins. Anyway, thanks for the memories, son, but remember; mine's the 10th,and your's is the (seven)teenth. Love always, Dad.

Alma,

Be strong as I know you can be. Be weak when you need to be.  I am here if you need me.

With deepest sympathy,

Erin

Alma,

I am so sorry and you are in my thoughts. I am grateful that you both were able to attend our reception Saturday.

With deepest sympathy,

Melissa

Dear Alma,  I was heartbroken to hear the news of Thomas passing.  I want you to know that my thoughts are with you today and always.  May time heal your pain and bring to light the wonderful times you had together.   I am truly sorry for your loss,  Jennifer Eickstaedt

Alma, you have my deepest sympathy. I has a been awhile since I have seen Thomas but I will always remember his great since of humor and his wit. It was obvious that Thomas cared for you very much in the way he would look at you and how he would say things just to get a reaction from you, and he always did.  His concern for you was real. If there is anything I can do for you please let me know,

In found memory of Thomas,

Stephen Palen

Alma,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.  May many happy memories bring you comfort.
