Sister Lorraine Doherty

Sister Lorraine Doherty, OSF

Sister Lorraine Doherty, 88, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minnesota, died at Assisi Heights on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Lorraine Ann Doherty was born on December 14, 1936, in Rochester, Minnesota, to Raymond and Marie (Teigen) Doherty. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1955, and made perpetual vows in 1960.\

Sister Lorraine Doherty devoted many years to ministry in education and parish service. She began teaching in 1957 at St. Peter School, North St. Paul, Minnesota, and continued at Sacred Heart School in Norfolk, Nebraska (1961–1965), St. Mary School in Owatonna, Minnesota (1965–1972), Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Easton, Minnesota (1972–1973), and St. Mary School in Winona, Minnesota (1973–1974). She then served in religious education, various parish roles, and prayer ministry at St. Joseph Parish in Grand Junction, Colorado (1974–1975). From 1997 to 2008, she was an educational assistant at Crucifixion Parish in La Crescent, Minnesota. From 2011 to 2022, she spent her final years of ministry serving as a Sacristy volunteer and Prayer Ministry at Assisi Heights in Rochester, Minnesota.

Survivors of Sister Lorraine Doherty include her Franciscan Sisters, with whom she shared life for 70 years; sister Helen Van Lith; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother Bernard Doherty.

A Resurrection Liturgy will be held at Assisi Heights at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery. To view the funeral via live stream, go to www.rochesterfrancisan.org.

Rest in peace Sister!

      Sister Lorraine was my dad's sister making her my aunt. She was always very sweet & kind. I have fond memories of her that I will cherish until I see her again in Heaven.
