Shawn Elizabeth Edmundson

Shawn Edmundson, 51 years old, of Arlington Heights, IL, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at her home after a short battle with cancer.

Born in 1960 in Luverne, MN to Arlen and Mary Edmundson, she is the second of six children in her family.  Shawn grew up in Minnesota and Wisconsin and graduated from Marinette High School in Wisconsin.  She received her B.A. in Accounting at UW Madison.

Throughout her 28-year career at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Shawn was an example of excellence in public service and was determined to make a contribution to the mission of the FDIC.  A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Shawn began her career with the FDIC in August of 1983 in the area of bank supervision, holding several positions including that of Bank Examiner, Supervisory Examiner in the Chicago North Field Office, Acting Field Supervisor in the Seattle, Washington Field Office, and Field Supervisor in the Des Moines, Iowa Field Office. She participated in a wide variety of special assignments and projects within the FDIC including lead instructor for the Financial Institution Analysis School and Project Manager for the Diversity Steering Committee.  In 2006, Shawn became the first Director of the Corporate Employee Program (CEP) where she played a pivotal role in the creation and administration of the CEP program and is credited with its continued success.  Shawn also served on Capitol Hill as a participant in The Brookings Institution’s prestigious LEGIS Fellows Program working with Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin.  Most recently, Shawn’s many talents were brought to bear helping the FDIC’s Division of Receiverships and Resolutions respond to the demands of this financial crisis as Lead Manager of Investigations at the Midwest Temporary Satellite Office, located in Schaumburg, Illinois.   Shawn contributed greatly to making the FDIC a preferred place to work, sharing her knowledge and treating people fairly and with respect.   Shawn was a leader whose collaborative approach, strength of character, and sense of purpose will have a lasting impact on the FDIC.

She was very passionate for her work.  She enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world, antiques, and treasured spending time with her partner, family and friends.

Shawn is survived by her partner of over 20 years, Philene Soppa of Arlington Heights, IL; her parents Arlen and Mary Edmundson of Gilbert, AZ; brother Alan (Julie) Edmundson of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; sister Dawn (Tom) Queen of Chandler, AZ; sister Terri (Keven) Schmidt of Madison, WI; brother Dean (Cheryl) Edmundson of Littleton, CO; sister Mali (Jason) Wilhelm of Phoenix, AZ; and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents Dean and Alta Jorgenson and Art and Mabel Edmundson.

(1119 11 ½ St. S.E., Rochester, MN 55904)  Visitation will be held from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, prior to Saturday, July 30th services, at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home.
