Ruth M. Nevling
Ruth M. Nevling, 91, of Rochester, died October 5, 2014 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester due to complications following hip surgery.
Margaret Ruth Ann was born on November 10, 1922 to Esther (Boyer) and Mathew Mulvihill in Chester, Minnesota.
As everyone called her Ruth, she legally changed her name. She married Edwin Reid Nevling and divorced after 5 years. Ruth was a 4-H leader during her children’s growing years. When IBM came to Rochester, Ruth was hired into the cafeteria. After reaching the ‘glass ceiling’ there, she transferred to manufacturing. After working in assembly and bank proof, she moved into the lab and formulated glues and grinding compounds. She was the first woman retiree from IBM Rochester with over 25 years of service. She went on to be the first president of the IBM Retirees’ club. During her early retirement years she volunteered to coordinate the AARP “55 Alive” program in SE Minnesota. She provided leadership and support for many organizations. Ruth was one of the initiators of the local law enforcement “Triad” program. Triad is support and interaction between seniors, sheriff and police. She is a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and Rochester Senior Center. For many years she was the block representative for many fundraising appeals and enjoyed getting to know her neighbors.
During her later years she remained active in the Olmsted Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, a regular volunteer in the gift shop and other duties.
She is survived by her children who reside locally: Jean M. (Gordon) Gooderum, after 40 years in the Twin Cities, in Stewartville, Karen A. (Larry) Glynn of rural Eyota, and Harry R. (Joanne) Nevling, after 25 years in Longmont Colorado, in Rochester. She is also survived by four grandchildren and two nieces.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling Harry Mulvihill.
Condolences
The family of Ruth M. Nevling has received the following condolences.
Dear Harry, Joanne, Terry & Family of Ruth,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your Mother was one of my favorite customers when I worked at the Bank, she used to
come to my window a lot. I miss not seeing both of you and Terry, I guess we are all so busy and time goes so fast.
I go to the Dr. a lot too, I go to Lacrosse, I was there Jan. thru Mar. for Dialysis, three times a week, then I got back to doing it at home, this my 4th year.
Your Mother was doing a lot of things in her life with her work and many other programs, it is nice that all of you have been here in Rochester for her in her later years. Bless all of you. Love, Gladys & Dave
I had the pleasure of working with Ruth for several years at IBM. She was a hard worker and a positive influence on the people with whom she worked. She was always upbeat and brought cheer to her co-workers. I am sorry to hear that she has passed on. Best wishes to her family. Jess Wallace
