Roger Paul Westra

Roger P. Westra passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at his home.

Roger was born June 5, 1941 in the Willmar, MN area to John and Marjorie Westra.

He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1959.  On January 10, 1959, he married JoAnn Tesch in Rochester.  They lived in Rochester until May of 1974.  They moved to High Forest Township in May 1974. Roger and JoAnn just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January. Roger was on the Rochester Police Department for 32 years and 8 months, retiring as a Lieutenant.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn; his daughter, Jodi Schleusner-Vreeman and Rocky Vreeman of Wykoff; grandsons, Christopher R. Schleusner and his wife Katy of Stewartville, and Brandon Vreeman of Preston; and two great-grandchildren, Ahnan and Sofia Schleusner of Stewartville.  He is also survived by his siblings, JoAnn Miller of Rochester, Carol Slawson-Rupp of Kasson, Mary (Richard) Nelson of Kasson, and Jim (Mary Jo) Westra of Byron; and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceed in death by his parents, John and Marjorie; and his son-in-law, Kim Schleusner.

Roger was a collector of old tractors, and interesting cars.  He loved farming and being a steward to the land and many animals he took care of.

The funeral service for Roger P. Westra will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2019 at Autumn Ridge Church in Rochester, co-officiated by Pastor Karen Foster and Pastor Woody Roland.  Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 10 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.  Burial will be in Wykoff Cemetery in Wykoff, MN.

 I would like to send my sincere sympathy in the loss of your beloved Roger, husband,father and Grandfather.  Roger was a sincere, friendly person, I know Art worked with Roger for years and He and I both  thought He was a good and caring Policeman, loved his farm and rural life and know how much he cared for you JoAnn.  We have known both of you for a long time.  Art passed Easter Sunday nearly a year ago now so my heart goes out to you.

Roger was a great guy! Enjoyed his friendship he was a lot of fun and a good friend and police officer.

We are saddened to hear of the death of Roger. We will continue to remember Roger with always having a smile on his face, a zest for life, his passion for tractors and having a heart of gold for anyone that was in need.

My sympathy to you JoAnn and all the Westra family.  I met Roger in 1980 when I came to Rochester, Minnesota with the FBI.  Roger was an exceptional human being and a credit to Law Enforcement.  God Bless.

Roger was great to work with. Roger had a great sense of humor that made working with him not only fun, enjoyable and unpredictable. Roger was one of the best story tellers I knew. The pranks Roger could pull off were priceless. I never met a more positive person. I will miss his stories, laughter and especially his smile. 


RIP Roger: Your watch has not ended please watch over all your fellow brothers and sisters from above, God needed another Blue Angel.
