Robert H. Levering
Robert Levering was born an identical twin with his brother Roger at
Eitel Hospital, in Minneapolis, MN on August 15, 1947. He left this world Saturday morning, June 8, 2013 at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis of advanced cancer.
“Bob” was raised in Robinsdale and Excelsior, MN, and graduated from Minnetonka High School. Shortly after graduation he joined the Army and served two tours in Viet Nam and was honorably discharged in 1968. Bob drove bus for Greyhound Bus Lines. Later he trained to be a caregiver. He cared for a senior in Duluth, MN, and then was able to provide care for his mother, Signe, the last 5 years of her life, and later for his Dad, John, at home in Excelsior.
Bob loved nature and liked to take a good hike, some in the Arboretum. After high school he moved up north, east of Ely, MN, and lived at Snowbank Lake.
After a car accident, one of Bob’s passions was to develop and write a mini-book, “Very Safe Driving”. He shared each rewrite with family and friends often as a part of his Christmas greetings.
Bob loved the Lord and Bible study. He was first a member of Excelsior Covenant Church, and after he moved to live with his twin in Rochester, became a member of Rochester Covenant.
Viet Nam impacted Bob deeply, not altogether in a positive way. He never married. Despite all he went through, he remained a gentle soul throughout his life. This included supporting two children through the Child Fund International, one in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and another in The Gambia, Africa. He maintained contact with them year after year through letters and pictures. Bob also has numerous great nieces and nephews that he maintained contact with all over the country. In addition to the Children’s Fund he supported many other charities.
Everyone says “Bob was such a kind man”. He always baked his famous special recipe cookies at Christmas and mailed them to Alaska, Georgia, and Excelsior and shared them with friends and neighbors.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents John & Signe Levering, Jr., and grandparents John & Lillian Levering and John and Minnie Hill. He is survived by his brother Roger of Rochester and sister Nancy Mattson of Anchorage, Alaska, and many cousins in the Minnetonka area, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 2:30pm at Rochester Covenant Church, 4950 31st Ave. NW in Rochester on Thursday, June 13, 2013 with Rev. Herb Frost officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 92.
Memorials are preferred to Rochester Covenant Church or Dorothy Day Hospitality House, a couple of Bob’s favorite missions.
Macken Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com
