Robert F. (W.) Schmidt
Robert F. (W.) Schmidt retired farmer of Eyota, died Monday, February 1, 2021 of cancer, surrounded by family. Bob was born on May 21,1928 to Frank and Frieda (Mueller) Schmidt of Eyota. He was born in the village of Dover at the home of his grandparents, Rudy and Lena Tschesche. Bob was baptized, confirmed, married, and now will be buried at St. Paul’s Church. Bob was a great grandson of the original homesteader Carl Bierbaum and wife Katharina Stickfort in Viola township(1854). Carl Bierbaum’s brother-in-law, John Stickfort donated the land from his adjoining farm for St. Paul’s Church and cemetery.
Bob was a long-time member of St. Paul’s, sang in the church choir, served as treasurer for 6 years, and with his wife Lois, was a youth fellowship leader for many years. He, Lois, and several cousins, planned and built a garage for the parsonage in 2007, and Bob was on the planning committee for the handicapped accessible addition to the church in 2009.
Bob grew up on a farm 5 miles northwest of Eyota on #9 across the road from his other grandparents, Albert and Kate Schmidt. He attended District 105 country school and graduated from Eyota High School in 1945. In his youth he enjoyed being with his parents, grandparents, and his special dogs. He also liked fishing, hunting, playing basketball and softball, riding his bicycle, and being with his special friend Arthur Pries. Bob married his high school sweetheart, Lois Jean Drysdale, on May 22, 1947.
Bob worked 5 years as bookkeeper for Foster Electric Co. in Rochester. In 1952, Bob and Lois bought a farm about 3 miles northwest of Eyota in section 4. After farming for 42 years, they sold the farm of 200 acres in the fall of 1994. They helped build a house and moved into Eyota next to the West Side Park (with 2 softball fields). “Eyota Bob” was plant manager at Kruegels Gas Plant terminal at Eyota from July 1996 until January of 2018. He mowed-lawn and blew-snow at the plant until 2018. He blew-snow on local driveways from then on.
Bob enjoyed time with his family; DANCING, COUNTRY MUSIC, singing, whistling, spending time in the summer at their cottage at Shell Lake, Wisconsin and driving the boat to teach several young people how to water ski. He also liked spending time with his close friends, Arthur and Marian Pries and their children both at home and at their winter home in Florida. Arthur helped build the cabin at Shell Lake. Bob also enjoyed taking pictures of family, friends, scenery, and animals, playing cards, bowling, and playing softball.
Of course there was a precious little girl named Jean who arrived in 1954. She went on to school at Eyota High. She was great in band, chorus, cheer leading, and baton twirling. She graduated in 1971 and went
on to work at IBM for 41 years. She retired in 2015. Someone named Nancy said “Jean was the best thing
that ever happened to you two”.
Bob and Lois enjoyed many trips (while she worked at IBM) to West Point, D.C., Florida, Dallas, Seattle, San Jose, and Tucson. They also made many personal trips to Virginia, St. Petersburg, Dallas, Amarillo, Atlanta, St. Louis, Helena and Lewiston, Montana, and Portland, Oregon .
Bob enjoyed seeing and listening to the local “Elvis” (Brad Boice) and Ray Sands “Minnesota Polka Dots”. He was a strong supporter of local high school sports and enjoyed watching volleyball, basketball (both girl’s and boy’s), softball and baseball. Being a fan for so many years, he and Lois were elected to the D E Sports Wall of Fame. He also enjoyed college (U of M) and professional sports (Twins , Vikings, Lynx and Minnesota Timberwolves).
Bob was on the Eyota Park Board for 10 years. He helped design and built dugouts and bleacher shelters for the softball fields at the Eyota West Side Park. Bob was also a member of the community choir for many years. He was even named “Citizen of the Year” in 2000.
In June of 2017 they celebrated their 70th anniversary with a party at the Eyota Legion with food and music by the Minnesota Polka Dots for dancing. Also in June of 2018, Bob celebrated his 90th birthday with a party/food and music by the Minnesota Polka Dots.
Many thanks should go to CNP Tina Small, Dr. Joseph Colgan, Nurse Laurie Drips, Dr. Robin Klebig of the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Lois B. Brunn of Apollo Dental Clinic, and Dana Johnson of the HyVee Pharmacy.
Bobs survivors include his wife Lois, daughter Jean (Roger) Johnson of Pine Island, grandson Rick (Brianna) their son Alexander Jensch of Rochester, Roger’s son Tom (Tammy) Johnson and family of Zumbrota, Roger’s daughter Jamie and family of Zumbrota, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Condolences
The family of Robert F. (W.) Schmidt has received the following condolences.
To the Schmidt Family,
Although we can’t be there in person, please know that we are celebrating Bob’s amazing journey with you in our hearts. Your many years of devotion to the youth of Eyota has left a lasting influence on everyone. This world would be a much better place if there were more people like“Bob and Lois”.
From the early years, when Bob and Lois would chaperone the church youth group, all the way to celebrating 70th and 71st wedding anniversary parties with a traditional “polka band” it has been a privilege to have you as part of our lives.
Rest In Peace Bob
Grant & Connie
Hello Jean. Bob must be your Dad.
I am so very sorry. He sounds like he had a very full life, was a wonderful father, husband and friend to many. My condolences to you, your Mom and family. ❤️
I met Bob and Lois through Brad Boice. What a sweet and amazing couple. I remember how much Brad appreciated that Bob and Lois came to his shows.
He always would recognize them by saying "Now Eyota is represented"!!!
My condolences to the family. What a great tribute to Bob. I am sure he is in heaven starting to organize or build something.
May Bob R.I.P.
How lucky we are to have had Bob with us all these years. Even though I am a Minnesota-Wisconsin "transplant", Bob (and Lois) always found time for a birthday/Christmas phone call so we could catch up on all the Eyota happenings. Back in the day when Bob and Lois were advisors for our Youth Fellowship group and we would take in an annual trip to a Twins game, everyone would always want to ride with them as their car was the most fun. Bob will always be remembered with love. He has definiitely set a high bar for the rest of us.
Rest in Peace Bob.
Lois, we are so sorry for your loss. Bob and you have brought joy into the lives of many.
The work done through Church will never be forgotten. No one will ever be able to replace the job you have done. In fact, your leadership inspired me and Tom to start a youth group at our church many years ago.
Bob was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Our hearts and prayers are with you.
All our love, Tom and Dorothy
Robert F (W)...
So many years and so many memories. So grateful to be one of those kids that went to Shell Lake with them, even BC ( before cabin) Ole Blue, aka Bob's boat lives on to keep making memories. We can't tell you how many times the "Sheriff of Washburn County" called to " check" his cabin they so graciously allowed their Godson to use with friends! We always followed the list Bob! And only you and Lois would drive Richie and I to Winona to march in the parade on July 4 then head back to the lake! We surely will miss you and will help keep a watchful eye on your Love Lois. May you rest peacefully with no more pain...love you.
Like everyone else who grew up in Eyota, Bob Schmidt was a permanent figure. I was lucky enough to grow up in the same (North) church as Bob and Lois. I remember them coming to all the home boys basketball games and other sports events. Being the sweetest couple in the world would be an understatement ! I always enjoyed seeing them at church and if they were not there, we would all wonder if they were alright. Bob was a walking encyclopedia of Eyota history. We are sadly losing this generation of story tellers. For more years than I can remember, I would get a phone call on my birthday from Bob. Today is my birthday and the phone call will not be coming. I will miss his funny jokes. Rest In Peace. You now have a captive audience in heaven to tell your stories! Love you.
Brenda
BobandLois flows off the tongue like a one syllable word in Eyota. Thankfully they were with us as a couple for such a long time. They were our youth advisors at St. Paul's when I was a lad in the 60's and they filled in later in the 90's when our kids were involved. Connie and I first danced at their 25th wedding anniversary at the Viola Town Hall in the 70's. Yes kids, these dates are all from the last century.
If you want to be like somebody, be like BobandLois.
Bob you will be missed and remembered with great fondness and love by many for many, many years.
oh where do I begin ! I had the pleasure growing up with Bobby Bobby and Lois . Their farm was just north of my families farm ! My brothers and I enjoyed going up there seeing the cats , gopher trapping and just to see what he was up too ! Bob and Lois are a local hometown favorite couple attending graduations and any sports games no matter what !! He surely will be missed by me and many others ! I will never forget your wit and that big smile of yours . Fly high Bob ! I love you and keep dancing ❤️
I am quite sure I was never in the gym at DEHS without Bob and Lois being there. They have been Dover-Eyota sports biggest fans. Bob has been a presence for most of us in Eyota and will be missed by all. Rest in Peace Bob.
