Robert “Bob” D. Grewell

With great sadness we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Dale Grewell on Sunday May 25, 2014 at Shorewood Independent Living in Rochester at the age of 82.

Bob was born to Burl and Goldie (Tomlinson) Grewell on June 5, 1931 at the family farm in Lebanon, Kansas.  He grew up on the family wheat farm and attended school in Lebanon, Kansas graduating from high school in 1949.  He was class president and played on the school’s baseball and basketball teams.  He continued to farm after graduating until joining the Air Force in 1951.  He was stationed in Japan which he worked in administration and played baseball for the Air Force team.

He married Darlene Ann Haresnape on February 23, 1952 in Red Cloud, Nebraska before being deployed to service.  After completing his enlistment with the Air Force in 1955 he attended Kansas State University graduating with Business Administration and Accounting degrees.  During his career Bob worked in many municipal and county governments across the United States including Colorado, Tennessee, Oregon and Minnesota.

He enjoyed all sports, especially golf.  He volunteered to coach his children in their sporting activities when they were younger.  He was an awesome dad, grandpa, friend and “Athletic Supporter.”  Bob was always a constant presence at hockey games, baseball games, soccer matches, golf matches and many other activities.

Bob was such a kind, caring, giving, sincere, fun-loving friendly man.  He made everyone feel special and many people called him “Grandpa Bob.”  He was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

Bob is survived by his children Robyn (Randy) Wagner-Koball of Rochester and Jeffrey (Cyndee) Grewell of Sarasota, Florida; grandchildren Tyler Anderson and Cameron Wagner; step grandchildren Ross Koball, Brittain Koball and Britney Johnson.  He is also survived by his special friend Peggy Lively of Minnetonka, MN.  He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Darlene who passed away on April 4, 1998 and his son-in-law Scott Wagner who passed away on January 22, 1995.

The memorial service for Bob will be at 11:00am on Saturday May 31, 2014 at the River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home with Pastor Linda Helberg officiating.  Burial of ashes will take place on a later date in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Red Cloud, Nebraska.  A visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am on Saturday before the service.

Robert and I were very good friends in high school, and stayed in fairly close touch thereafter.  He was a person I always greatly admired.

When you bring his ashes to Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Red Cloud, if it is possible, I'd very much like to be present.

My work (Topeka office of U. S. Senator Pat Roberts) phone number is 785-295-2745; and I check my email regularly.

Robyn and family,

I'm so sorry to hear the news of your Dad.  In reading his obituary, he sounds like a wonderful father and Grandpa.  I can't make the funeral, but want to let you know I am thinking of you and your family.  Remember all the happy times to help heal your sadness.

I was very surprised to see that Bob has passed away. I met Bob in April when he came into Insty-Prints to order his change of address cards and an address stamper. We had several nice conversations about selling his estate, golf and a number of other things. He was a very nice man! Sorry for your loss! Kate
