Richard K. “Dick” Sherman

Dick Sherman, 81, went home Saturday, December 5th, 2015.

Dick was born July 2nd, 1934 to Roy and Ruth (Loebig) Sherman in Wesley, IA.  He grew up in Austin, MN and graduated from Pacelli Catholic High School where he and all his brothers loved to play football.  After high school he briefly attended St. Johns University, worked the railroad, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army (Korean War, stationed in Virginia).  After an honorable discharge, he entered Loras College, Dubuque, IA where he majored in History and minored in Biology.  More importantly, it  was  in Dubuque where he met his future bride, Martha E. Kolck who was attending Clarke College there at the time.  From there, he was off to his first teaching/coaching post at St. Anthony’s High School in Sterling, CO.  He and Martha married on June 10, 1961.  During his summers in CO he was a National Park Ranger (Rocky Mountain, Glacier and Yellowstone).

In 1965 he joined the Lourdes High School community.  He was a natural educator and coach, and knew how to work with young adults, on and off the field.  When asked what subject he taught, he would jokingly answer “Discipline”.  He helped established girls Tennis and Basketball programs in Minnesota. He coached some talented athletes and did his part to help win a few titles along the way.  After he retired, he worked 15 years as the school’s archivist and display manager.  He was a humble follower of Jesus Christ and believed in the Catholic educational system.  He loved Lourdes.

Dick also loved to travel the U.S., especially National Parks and Historic sites.  He was always planning the next great family trip. Rocky Mountain and Glacier were his favorites.  Yet, nothing beat the annual 4th of July trek to Grand Marais with the family. He loved to camp and hike with his kids, take pictures and do slide shows, cross country ski, read the paper on the porch, and work in the yard.

Dick is survived by his wife, Martha; children Rick (Ale), Beth (friend Kathy) and Mike; step grandchildren Adolfo, Moises and Hosanna; bothers Ike (Juanita), Bill (Diana), Gary (Terryl) and John.; adopted sister Vicki.  He is proceeded in death by his parents and brothers Teddy and Frank.

We invite you to join us in remembrance and celebration of Dick’s life on Wednesday, December, 9th, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Lunch will follow the Mass. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday, December 8th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home.

Donations are preferred to Sacred Heart Haiti Mission.

Condolences

The family of Richard K. “Dick” Sherman has received the following condolences.

May  his soul rest in peace. Will pray  for the wellness of the family

Condolences and prayers to the Sherman family. Dick was an important part of the Lourdes culture--engaging, supportive of students, strong values. I loved his sense of humor and so admire what he did for womens' sports at Lourdes.

Sherman family- Mr.Sherman was a great teacher and always fun. He always had a smile for his students that you knew was genuine. Peace and Blessings to his family and friends! Jeanne (Trusty) Vehrenkamp class of 1974

Dear Sherman Family,

The Lourdes Girls Basketball program and I share our deepest sympathy on the passing of "Coach Sherman".  We thank him for all he did to help girls athletics at Lourdes.  We will do our best to honor him in all we do as a team.

Sincerely,

Aaron Berg and The Lourdes Girls Basketball Team

You will be missed, Mr. Sherman. I will forever remember you with your two hands on your forhead, making a door opening motion, reminding us the importance of "opening our minds"... Thank you for sharing your passion for teaching, and influencing so many of us so positively. May you be at peace...

My sympathy to Marty and family.  Dick and my dad played football together many years ago in Austin.  I only had the good fortune to meet Dick once and he left a lasting impression of optimism and kindness.    Best Regards - Dan Judd  New Brighton, MN

Dick (and Martha) - GREAT next door neighbors since 2003!  Heaven is getting a good one!  He'll be missed with his smile and "working" in the yard!!  Love, Lori and Rachel

I am so sorry for your loss. Dick was a great man, teacher and friend. I'm quarantined with whooping cough and can't attend then services but know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I'm so sad for you.

Martha and family,  my sympathy and prayers for Dick and all of you at his passing.

I didn't know Dick well, but well enough that one summer afternoon most of fifty years ago I saw him on the street in Iowa City where he was apparently attending summer classes and stopped to ask something like "Don't I recognize you from Loras?"  His response, which I suspect was quintessentially an example of his sense humor, was "You should, I'm married to your first cousin!"  He had a way of interacting that made you remember him and enjoy having known him.  Many years of silence have passed since then, but neither of you were forgotten in all that time.

Remeber, he and we all will pass over from death to life.

You were loved, Mr. Sherman.  For good reason.  Rest in peace knowing you did a great job.

My thoughts are with the Sherman family during your time of great loss. Mr. Sherman is certainly part of the great memories associated with Lourdes. I remember the twinkle in his eyes when I pronounced "Appomattox" completely wrong; he was trying hard not to laugh in front of the whole class, yet managed to very gently correct me while not making a big deal out of the whole thing. I was also Beth's "Big Sis" (hi Beth!) when I was a senior, and had a special glimpse into how much Mr. Sherman loved his family. And that cigar....they just don't make 'em like Mr. Sherman anymore. Blessings to the Sherman family.

God's blessing to the Sherman family during this difficult time.

Mr. Sherman was one of my favorite history teachers I've ever had, he always came into the classroom full of life and always, always had a smile in his face! He made learning about history, quite enjoyable!

I know he will be greatly missed by many and I know the humidors will be plentiful! ?

God bless you all!

My thoughts are with the Sherman family tonight. Dick Sherman was my mentor. I loved my years playing tennis and basketball for him at Lourdes. What a great guy. I am so glad I got to see him last December at the Hall of Fame event. He will be missed and he went too soon!

To the Sherman family, I send my heartfelt condolences to you all.  He was truly a wonderful man, teacher, coach!  I want to thank him for being a proponent of women's athletics for Lourdes high school and beyond. He helped many of us young girls believe we had the ability to perform at high levels in whatever sport we wanted. I know if it weren't for him I for one may have never had the chance to run at the high school level and beyond.

May he rest in peace in the arms of God and all the angels!

Dear Sherman family,

So many wonderful memories we have of Dick Sherman.  He not only taught history, he made history!  Pioneering the Girls tennis program, coaching the girls basketball  team to the first MSHSL state tourney, then archiving all LHS memorabilia.  It's teachers like Dick that we acquaint with LHS.  And Martha- you were there to support the teams and Dick through the many games and trips. God Bless you and your family.

Peace.

Mr Sherman was a kind person towards all us young people trying to find our way. I'll never forget him.

My condolences to Mr. Sherman's family - he truly loved teaching and it showed in his smile during every class I had with him.

May the humidors in heaven be  stocked and ready for your arrival!

Dear Marty and family.  My prayers and thoughts are with you. Rosalie Canfield

Memories of Mr. Sherman's classes and extracurricular instruction will always be cherished. He was a good man with a passion for learning and teaching that inspired many of us throughout our lives. All my best to his family.

Great teacher. He focused on historical events by discussing in-depth the what & why instead of just memorizing dates, etc.  He helped us become better critical thinkers. Can still see his classroom with various posted quotes of historical figures above the blackboards.  He is one of my favorite teachers from my high school and college years.

Dear Sherman family, sorry for your loss.  May it comfort you to know that he is fondly remembered by many of his former students.  How lucky for us that he chose teaching as his profession.

My husband John and I both knew the Sherman family.  John frequently spent a lot of time at their home playing cards and generally having fun with all the boys.  They were a very nice family and all the boys turned out well. Dick will be remembered by fondly by many relatives and friends.3

I'm grateful for the privilege it was to be one of your history students, Mr. Sherman.  You made a lifelong impact upon my studies, my heart, my life.  Thank you for believing in me, and in the value of all your students.

God bless, Dick. You done good.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Sherman as a teach and as my tennis coach.  He made my years of tennis at LHS some of the best memories I have!  He used to team up with Mr. Hrabe and practice against me and my doubles partner. Mr. Sherman ALWAYS had a cigar in his mouth while playing tennis with us. Looking back on it now puts a smile on my face!  We sometimes laughed so hard we cried on the court because Mr. Sherman and Mr. Hrabe were horrible in their tennis abilities but they kept us us on our toes!  Oh the memories! RIP Coach! I have so many great memories that include you! Mrs. Sherman...you were always so kind to the LHS tennis team.  I will keep your family in my prayers.

Mr. Sherman was one of the most beloved teachers at Lourdes high school. Everyone I remember loved his class. He always kept it fun and interesting.  When I returned home, I would visit Lourdes and made it a point to see Mr. Sherman.

Mr. Sherman will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on with all the students lives he touched.

Class of 1987

Rest in peace Mr. Sherman. My prayers and thoughts are with your family at this time.

Crystal Hill (Williams) class of '96

I feel lucky to have had Mr. Sherman for a Civics and US History teacher, possibly his last ever class if I remember correctly.  He always had a humorous and anecdotal style that I'll never forget; he has always been one of my favorites.  From his slide shows to his room lined with Wheaties boxes, he was always one of a kind and unforgettable.  The devotion and dedication of teachers like him was what made Lourdes a special place to learn and grow up.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Michael Lopour

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Sherman family.  Mr. Sherman was a wonderful teacher who knew how to connect with kids and bring history to life through his stories and experiences.  What an impacted he has made on so many lives.

I'm sorry to hear about "Mr. Sherman's" passing.  I had him as a teacher way back in the early 1970's and I will always remember his sense of humor and how much he cared about us as people!

Godspeed Mr. Sherman~Thoughts and Prayers for his family, loved ones, and friends.

I will remember him as a man dedicated to service and the greater good. A positive influence on my life and lives of the students in our class. Truly one of the good guys! May you rest in Peace~

My condolences to Mr. Sherman's family and continued prayers. Mr. Sherman was one of the classic characters at Lourdes High School. I graduated in 1975 and remember Mr. Sherman as always ready with a quick smile and a witty saying. He was a favorite, inside and outside of the classroom. I've been a teacher now for nearly 30 years and I count Mr. Sherman among those who inspired me to teach, and to do so with a sense of humor.

Dear Mrs. Sherman, my classmate Mike and the rest of the Sherman family,

My sincere condolences for your tremendous loss.

Mr. Sherman was a truly great teacher and coach.  I absolutely loved his class and he helped inspire a lifelong love of history for me.   To this day, I saved one of the group projects we did in his class.  (A tape recording of my family's reenactment of the surrender at Appomattox....what a great way to learn!)  I have never saved another assignment from any other class.

Mr. Sherman will always be alive in his students' hearts.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

So sorry for your loss Mr Sherman was a kind sweet pleasant soul and I'll always remember his love of cigars! May he rest in peace and sending love and comfort hugs to the family

Such wonderful memories of Lourdes High School and Mr. Sherman......he will long be remembered.  I graduated in 1972 and in our history class with Mr. Sherman we buried a "Time Capsule".....we opened it in the year 2000.  He made class time interesting.  He will be missed.
