Richard Carlton Hines

Surrounded by his loving family, Dick Hines passed from this life to Eternal Life on Tuesday, March 6, at Season’s Hospice House in Rochester.

Dick was born on March 31, 1943, to Kay and Carlton Hines. He was a life-long resident of Rochester, graduating from Catholic schools and Rochester Junior College. He obtained his plumber and steam-fitter licenses and was employed by Himec Plumbing and Heating for 25 years, spending many of those years at St. Mary’s Hospital. In 1985 he began an amazing career at Mayo Clinic as construction manager in Facilities Project Services. He retired in 2010 and continued to work at Assisi Heights as Director of Facilities. From an early age, Dick formed a deep attachment with the Sisters of St. Francis and he considered this final responsibility as one of his greatest endeavors.

Dick was not a man who could say, “That’s good enough.” He had a passion for accuracy and perfection, which he so comfortably could bring together through teamwork and cooperation. He did this through a keen sense of humor that will be missed so deeply. He understood how to create an environment where laughter became contagious and people of diverse backgrounds and expertise could work together seamlessly. He had many extraordinary gifts, but one of the greatest was his passion for people.  If you met Dick Hines, you likely have at least one story that you will not forget. Nothing made him more proud than working for Mayo Clinic as a construction manger.

Dick loved spending time with friends and family at the lake in Hayward, WI where he made many friends.  He enjoyed discovering new places and spending time with nature.  He loved fishing with his grandchildren and teasing them about the big one that got away.  Family was always his number one priority.  A special memory he cherished was his trips with Mary to Italy and the Holy Land.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his son, Tom and his wife Garu of Arlington, VA; his stepchildren, Mike Jensen and his wife Sara, Renee Redalen and her husband Tom, and Patrick Jensen. His grandchildren brought him so much joy and purpose. They are Marissa Recker, Megan and Maya Redalen, Emma, Isaiah and Ashley Jensen and Maia Hines. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Annis and her husband Brian of Palm Harbor, Fl.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 9 from 5:00-7:00pm in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, 1119 11 1/2 Street SE in Rochester and one hour prior to the Mass at Assisi Heights Convent on Saturday. The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:00am at Assisi Heights Convent, 1001 14th Street NW in Rochester.  Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, 500 11th Avenue NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Sisters of St. Francis, 1001 14th Street NW, Rochester, MN 55901 and Season’s Hospice House, 5650 Weatherhill Road SW, Rochester, MN 55902.

Condolences

The family of Richard Carlton Hines has received the following condolences.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Dick always brought a great sense of humor with him, cracked a joke or two and enjoyed the jokes we shared with him. Dick certainly brightened the day when he came to visit all of the nurses in the Light Room. He was such a nice person with a kind heart.

Prayers and hugs to all of your family,

The nurses from the Dermatology Phototherapy Room

Dear Mary and family,

I really enjoyed working with Dick on construction projects over the years at Mayo.  He always had a way of making things interesting and fun to say the least!  We also enjoyed trading stories about the Hayward area as our family still has their place on Grindstone. Dick made the world a better place and I am grateful for having known him.

Wishing you peace and healing,

Ann Flott

Dear Mary and Family,

We were saddened to hear Dick has passed away.  Carol and Lloyd were kind enough to catch us after church yesterday to share the news.

Having never had the pleasure of meeting Dick, the obituary certainly painted a wonderful picture of who he was.

Please know you will remain in our hearts and prayers as you walk through this very difficult time.

Hugs,  The Poctas

Dear Mary,

There just are no words to tell you how sorry I am for your loss of Dick.  I am sorry I was not able to make it to the funeral but none the less you have been in my thoughts and prayers all this past week.

I will always remember Dick for his great sense of humor and his commitment to the Franciscans at Assisi Heights. He played great jokes on many of us at Mayo and we loved telling those stories for years afterward. We also shared some great stories about times at the Heights.

To Dick’s family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. We’ve lost a wonderful man, and yet we were so blessed to have had him in our lives.

My sympathy goes out to the family of Dick Hines.  Mary, I am sure this is hard for you at this time, knowing you have had to do this before.  Dick always brought a smile and conversation to Mayo E11 floor and then would leave.  Let me know if I can assist the family in any way.

It is with our deepest sympathy we remeber Dick as a valued man of character. He was a dedicated and supportive leader who welcomed anyone in his presence , a team. A tribute and memory of Dick’s professionalism and ethics, a concrete symbol and thoughtful gesture that will live on rich in tribute and memory would be the the main entrance steps and ramp at Assisi Heights. It symbolizes this mans vision, allowing me the opportunity to create a vision, welcoming everyone in thoughtful creativity.  Humbly, Ken and Rita Dondlinger

Dear Hines family,

It is truly with heavy heart to hear of Dick’s passing but lightened in knowing any suffering is done and he is an added angel in your lives.

Kristi and I often think of you, in the many ways we have both known many of you, and always carry memories and thoughts of your family.  Yes, I for certain have many stories of Dick, whether it was the fake column, toilet stool in an office, sheet rocking up Brice Rhode’s door, making an office into a shower, a baseball field (pretty sure he had a hand in that one... ;-)... on an on, but my favorite is the time we walked out of work together and he told me about the performance evaluation he just had... He knew I’d appreciate it given my HR days.  Apparently, a provider commented on his evaluation that he needed to start raising his hand when he is telling the truth... imagine that... I am pretty sure Dick was always telling the truth, some people had a harder time of interpreting it.

Dick will have left an incredible legacy in the person he was... kind, caring and charismatic!

It is with heartfelt gratitude in knowing Dick that we will be thinking of you all during this time of reflection, laughter and tears.

Richard “Dick” Hines was my best friend. I met Dick in 1983 when I came to Rochester in the position of  Vice President of Nursing at Saint Mary’s Hospital.  We quickly became friends and I loved his infectious attitude, sense of humor and work ethic. We teamed together to walk the halls  and review construction projects. I know some of the contractors did not like seeing the two of us on our inspections because their work had to exceed the established quality standards .  Then Dick met Mary, the love of his life, and another exciting chapter of his life started. Dick and Mary spent time at our lake cabin in Hayward and Dick and I spent many hours talking while fishing, walking, or driving around the area. Both Dick and Mary fell in love with the area and always liked to come back for a vacation or weekend getaway. We had 35 years of great times and he will be missed. I take great comfort in knowing that he was a man of faith and he has gained an advantage over those who wait for the door to heaven to open. Thanks Dick for all the memories.

Mary you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.  With deepest sympathy, your old MMV friend, Jackie

My sincere sympathy to the Dick Hines family.

I had the great pleasure to work with Dick on fire alarm projects at the Mayo Clinic and Assisi Heights. I will never forget the random phone calls to catch me off guard or talk about my garden. Rest in peace my friend.

It was a pleasure meeting Dick last year at Mayo Clinic. I wish I had another chance to make him my Irish Soda bread.... My prayers are with his family and friends at this difficut time.

I had a wonderful opportunity to meet a very dear man and I only knew him for a short amount of time, for over a year, he brought wisdom and laughter to my life. I am blessed to know him. My deepest thoughts and prayers to all of his family and friends in this time of mourning.

Besides his contagious humor, Dick was one of the smartest people I knew. His energy was limitless. It was a pleasure working along side Dick on several construction projects at Mayo Clinic. He was extremely knowledgeable and I learned a lot from him. He will be truly missed. I was blessed to have been a small part of his life. Thank you Dick for your friendship.
