Richard Alphonse Mangen

Richard A. “Dick” Mangen of Rochester, MN born September 29th, 1935 in Chicago, IL to Alphonse and Alvera (Lenihan) Mangen and passed on September 2, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, MN after a long and courageous battle with heart disease.

Richard was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a sergeant in the United States Air Force Fire Department Crash Rescue Squadron overseas and in the U.S.

On November 22, 1956 he married Marguerite Ann Yunker in Blackwell, Oklahoma and raised five children. With the support of his wife and five children, he went to night school and received a degree in in Heating, Air conditioning and Refrigeration Service and eventually used that knowledge to become a business owner and later, an instructor at UTI (Universal Technical Institute).

One of his greatest joys and source of great pride was being ordained a Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church in 1986. He served for over 25 years in both Illinois and Minnesota and though Richard was smaller in stature, he had a big and generous heart and focused much of his ministry on Social Concerns and helping those in need.

Richard never became a wealthy man in his lifetime but he was rich in the love of family, friends and his parishioners. Though often shy at first glance, he was actually very charismatic and people loved listening to Richard’s stories. He was a master storyteller and kept everyone’s attention whether age 2 to 92.

He enjoyed fishing, old cars, Elvis and a good barbeque with friends and family. His greatest love besides his wife, Marge, were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife and five children: Terri (Thomas) Poterucha, Jeff (Yana) Mangen, Julie Mangen, Sandra (Bob) Mangen Lukasik and Laurie Mangen. In addition, he will be missed by his 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, his loving sister, Marlene Shorter, Nina Mangen, sister-in-laws Linda Brand and Rosi Terada and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ronald Mangen and Robert (Ann) Mangen , sister Germaine Kramer Stone, brother-in-laws, James Yunker, James Terada and Daniel Shorter.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Rosary will be prayed at 4:45 pm. The Funeral Mass officiated by Bishop John M. Quinn, Father Timothy T. Reker, and Rev. Msgr Thomas Cook will take place Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Rochester, MN at 11:00am. Family and Friends are invited for visitation one hour prior to the Mass. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis of Assisi Church/St. Vincent DePaul Society. Military Honors for Richard will be performed by American Legion Post 92 of Rochester.

Dick Mangen was an amazing man.  He had a big heart, loved working with people, had a great sense of humor, and cared deeply for his family.  He will be missed.  Surely some of his stories will live on along with happy memories of time spent with him.

We were very sorry to hear about Dick.  Our hearts and prayers go out to Marge and all the Mangen family.  Dick was such an asset to St Matthew's Church.  I know that he will live on in your hearts because of his love for you and the memories you shared.  May Christ's peace and love comfort you now and in the future.
