Randall “Randy” Alexander

Randall J. “Randy” Alexander, 66 of Rochester, MN died March 7, 2025 peacefully at home with his wife by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Randy was born July 22, 1958 in Rochester to David and Alyce (Ivers) Alexander. He graduated from Mayo High School in 1976. He attended University of MN Duluth and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1980. Randy married his soulmate Rene Ruth Thompson on June 30, 1984. Together they raised their two sons in Rochester in the home that Randy built for the family.

Randy worked for Alexander & Sons Builders, learning the trade from his father and grandfather, building custom homes, and later taking over the business with his brother Jim.

He was a member and past Master of Masonic Lodge #21, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Osman Shrine, and Rochester Shrine Cycle Patrol. He spent many weekends riding motorcycles in parades to raise money for Shriners Children’s Twin Cities.

Randy was a devoted youth hockey coach for many years alongside his two sons. He was a mentor to many youth players and enjoyed playing men’s league hockey himself, where he made lifelong friendships.

Randy enjoyed many years of deer hunting on the Thompson family farm with his wife’s family and his boys. Woodworking and crafting were lifelong passions along with gardening and helping make salsa for family and friends. He loved the sport of fishing from a very young age and shared this love with his family while fishing in Canada, on Lake Mille Lacs, and especially on the Mississippi River, where their cabin resides. This cabin was a special place for several generations of Alexander family members to enjoy the river and fishing.

Randy was the moral compass and voice of reason for many. He had a strong faith in God and anticipated seeing those who had gone before him, especially his dog Aimee, in heaven.

He is survived by his wife Rene, sons Ross (Austin) Alexander of Comstock, MN, Roy Alexander of Fargo, ND, grand-daughter Adelynn Alexander of Fargo, ND, parents David (Alyce) Alexander of Rochester, sister Nancy (Dave Strain) Doughty of Rochester, brother Jim Alexander of Rochester, sister Beth (Rob) Knutson of Pillager, MN, brother-in-law David (Jean) Thompson, sisters-in-law Roxanne (Mike) Maristuen, Rebecca (Tom) Thompson, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and friends.

The family prefers memorials in Randy’s name to Shriners Children’s Twin Cities or Mayo Clinic Cancer Research.

The memorial service for Randy will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at 1:00PM in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Visitation will be held starting one hour prior to the service at the chapel. A luncheon is planned immediately following in the adjacent River Park Reception Hall.

An invitation to wear a fishing-themed shirt in memory of Randy is extended to all who attend.

I just learned of this news. I have been wondering of Randy's disposition for years.  I spent 30 years in Alaska so I could have shared fantastic stories with him.

Dear Renee, Ross, Roy, and family, We are saddened to hear of the loss of Randy.  You are in our thoughts and prayers. Patrick and Lisa Luetmer.

I met Randy when I was 17 years old, and still called him a dear friend 47 years later. Randy knew how to have fun and we shared many laughs, but he also had a gift of coming alongside his friends as empathizer and encourager. He was so loyal and he was quick to forgive. Randy knew what was important in life.

I love you Rene, and pray for you, Ross, and Roy. May you feel God’s perfect peace and love.

The great memories I have of Randy are many, and I’m thankful that when I think of the times we have shared I can only smile. Randy and I were so broke back in college that we’d often swing through the dorm laundry room just to check the coin returns for extra change. We also were determined to go to Florida for spring break even though we couldn’t afford it. We rented a Chevy Chevette, parked it in a lot near the beach, and slept in it—the cops would knock on the windows in the middle of the night and make us move, but we would just head to another lot! We barely fit in that little car but it only added to the memories. He was a lifelong, true friend. The good times and laughs were many and led to us being in each other’s wedding, and being blessed with sons at the same time too. We shared a friendship that time and distance could not change. My last visit with Randy was a week of so before he passed. We had a great time of  reminiscing, and as I think back on that day, I’m grateful that our goodbye was filled with laughter and love. Rene, Ross, and Roy—just know how much I will miss my old friend. I am thinking of your entire family.

We are so, so very sad of Randy’s passing.  He was just the kindest friend.  We have the best hockey adventure memories ever.  The hockey parent bus trip to Hibbing with Randy & Rene holds such fun memories.  Also, when our boys were seniors in high school we took a spring trip to FL.  We had a caravan of 3 families driving and would switch drivers every 3 hours. When we stopped, it was Randy who reassured me that I was driving just fine. I’ll always remember Randy’s calm demeanor.  He was always happy and enjoyed life.  Randy had a great sense of humor.  Heaven has gained a special soul.

Barb & I extend our heartfelt sympathy to Rene & the Alexander and Thompson Families. Memories, times together, moments of joy and celebration as well challenges faced will leave a lasting presence and a direction forward as you heal.

May God be a source of strength, courage and Love to you all.

We are so sorry to hear of Randy's passing. Our hearts go out to you and your family and we hope that the memory of Randy's fulfilling life will bring you solace and peace. I always admired how genuinely nice Randy was to me and to everyone. I loved going to parades just to watch Randy ride those bikes.   It was fun watching him and the guys ride.

From our days together in Sunday School to our time at Mayo, Randy always remained a great friend and was one of the kindest people I've ever met. May you find peace in knowing he is in a better place and his love for you will last for eternity.
