Ralph Meyer

Ralph Meyer passed away  peacefully early Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born May 8, 1941 in Owatonna, MN to August and Grace (Kubista) Meyer.  He grew up in Brownsdale, MN and graduated from Rose Creek High School in 1959.

After high school, Ralph traveled throughout the country and experienced many life adventures.     He worked at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley Lake Tahoe, CA,  the Chinese New Year in San Francisco and picked apples in Seattle,  WA to name a few.

After traveling around the country, he returned to MN in 1962 and met his love of 50 years, Patricia Gahagan of Austin, MN .  They were then married in July of 1963 at our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Brownsdale.  The couple then settled in Rochester where Ralph was employed with Edwards Sheet Metal, later becoming Tom Brogan Heating & Air Conditioning.  He retired in 2002.

Ralph enjoyed life to the fullest and loved his family with all his heart.   He was the very best husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and was a friend to many.  He enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Northern Minnesota, annual trips to Arizona in the winter, and venturing off on driving-destination trips across the country.  For those who knew him best, he was always in the middle of several projects, as he loved being busy.

Ralph is survived by his wife Patricia, three daughters – Brenda (Dave) Johnson of Chatfield, MN;  Jenny Meyer of Chicago, IL; Christine Meyer of Chicago, IL; three granddaughters – Melissa Mattson of Chicago, IL; Krista Mattson of Chatfield, MN and Megan Johnson of Chatfield, MN;  two great granddaughters- Rosalie and Kendall, as well as his loyal and loving companion, dog Mattie.

He is also survived by sisters Judy (Neil) Knutson of Brownsdale, MN;  Janet Meyer of Minneapolis, MN; Suzanne (David) Wilson of Hudson, WI; Cecile Kling of Minneapolis, MN; and Phyllis Johnson of Rochester, MN.

He was preceded in death by parents and sister, Mary Wilson.

The family would like to his thank all of his friends and family who have supported Ralph through his illness and journey.   They would also like to thank physicians and advocates at the Mayo Clinic; Dr. Timothy Olson; Dr. Michael Kidd; Dr. John Fitz; Dr. Lowell Dale, Janet Nelson, RN, and Lynn Borkenhagen, RN, CNP  and Mayo Hospice Care.

The funeral mass for Ralph will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Church of the Resurrection.  Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday, November 22, 2013 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Jenny and Family,

I was so sorry to hear of your Dad's illness and passing. Know that the tears will always be there, but it will get easier to think of him with smiles as you remember all the wonderful times you spent together and all the memories you made as a family. You all have each other to hold and he was so lucky to have all of you by his side. I still remember your mom and dad visiting you in SF and spending time with them and what a fun couple they were.  (HUGS) my dear friend.

Love, Suanne

So sorry to hear about Ralph. I guess the Lord needed another good man.

God be with you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Sally and Harold Oviatt

Dearest Pat & family

How sad we were to receive the news of Ralph's passing.

We remember him with such fondness. We just loved his company and had so much fun when you came to Scottsdale.

He was the most gentle man you could wish to meet with an obviously deep sense of love for his family. He was quiet and unassuming but enjoyed a good laugh and was always interested in what people had to say.

He just loved his 'day at the races' and we enjoyed meeting up with you there. Unfortunately none of his luck rubbed off on us! [In memory of Ralph we will put $5 on #5 in the fifth race next time we're at Turf Paradise!] Happy days ...

At this difficult time, Pat, we know you'll find strength and take comfort from Ralph's beloved 'girls'. We're sorry we can't be there.

Joy says: I'll write to you properly soon.

Geoff says: Thanks for the memories, old son. You meant a lot to me and I'll miss you ...

Brenda and family,

Please accept my deepest condolence to you and your family on the loss of your father. My prayers are with your family.
