Peggy Ann Ystenes

Peggy Ann Ystenes, age 73, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, in Rochester.

Peggy was born on July 14, 1952, in Racine, Wisconsin, to Edward and Evelyn (Kothe) DeGroot. She graduated from St. Catherine High School in Racine. Throughout her life, Peggy held several positions, including working at Elmwood Bank and Spring Dental in Racine, WI, and New Flyer of America in Crookston, MN, and most recently at Mayo Clinic.

Peggy married John Ystenes in 1973, and together they had two children. Although later divorced, family remained the center of Peggy’s life. Her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. She was extremely supportive of her entire family and could always be found cheering on her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews at their sporting events and activities. Peggy also loved to read and enjoyed her daily walks.

Known for her caring and compassionate nature, Peggy was thoughtful, sweet, generous, and humble. As her parents aged, she moved back to Racine to care for them, a true reflection of her selfless heart. She was a devoted member of Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church and lived her life grounded in her deep Catholic faith.

Peggy is survived by her children, Adam (Amy) Ystenes of Rochester, MN, and Kristi (Clint) Hart of Rochester, MN; her beloved grandchildren, Callum and Harper Ystenes, and Isabelle, Catherine, and Wyatt Hart; her siblings, Cindy (Dennis) Goffe, Jeff (Susan) DeGroot, Jon (Donna) DeGroot, Lesley (Scott Simon) DeGroot, and Jennifer (Bruce) Shawhan; and numerous nieces and nephews who held a very special place in Peggy’s heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Evelyn DeGroot, and an infant sister, Jill.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church, 1600 11th Ave. SE, Rochester, MN. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Memorial contribution may be directed to Seasons Hospice 1696 Greenview Dr. SW, Rochester, MN 55902 or Kidney Cancer Association, PO Box 676226, Dallas, Texas 75267-6226

Condolences

The family of Peggy Ann Ystenes has received the following condolences.

I worked with Peggy in MRI at St. Mary’s and our entire crew absolutely loved shifts with Peggy. I am so grateful for her service to our patients and our department. I am so sad to learn of her passing. My condolences to her entire family, she was a treasure in our department.

I’m so sad to loose my life long friend. Peggy and I have remained friends since childhood. I have so many good memories together from playing jump rope, roller skating, running through the sprinklers all the freedoms of being a child in the 60s 70s.  One of our favorite things to do was horseback riding. We went as often as we could.
I’m so sorry for the family’s loss.  Being close neighbors your family was like extended family members.
Until we meet again my friend RIP

It is with much sadness that I write this after finding out about Peggy‘s passing.   I adored peggy and we worked together for several years at New Flyer of America. We had so much fun and I just loved her wit and laughter. She was so Proud of her dad’s service and would bring in flags for all the special veteran holidays. She was also proud of her children and grandchildren and I pray that your wonderful memories will keep her near. Rest in peace, dear Peggy, you will be dearly missed. 🙏🙏

I was so surprised and sad to hear of Peggy’s passing!  I worked with her at Spring Dental Group and she was one of my favorite people. She brought charm, integrity and propriety to the practice and everyone loved her.  She was the best co-worker and friend you could ask for. Heaven has gained an angel and we have lost a true “lady”!

Sympathy to the family. Peggy was one of team for many years, hard working and fun to be around, she will be missed.

Adam & Any, I'm so sorry for your loss. Peggy was such a sweet lady and so proud of all of you. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Peggy always had a smile on her face!  I have a lot of great memories from days spent at their house with Adam in high school!  Tracy and I are thinking of you all!

Peggy always had a smile on her face and never missed a grandchild's game. We will miss seeing her every summer when he hit Rochester. Hugs and prayers to all her family.

I went to OOST training at Mayo Clinic with Peggy even staying with her at her house during a winter storm. Peggy had such a great heart and compassion. She will be deeply missed. ❤️‍🩹 I am so sad to see she passed. Loved her smile ❤️‍🩹
