Peder Johnson Jr.
Peder “Pete” Johnson, Jr., 87, of Rochester, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, June 16, 2018 at Edenbrook Nursing Home in Rochester, Minnesota.
Pete was born in LeRoy, MN on May 5, 1931 to Peder Sr. and Esther Johnson. He graduated from LeRoy High School in 1949. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and proudly served until 1954. Pete worked for the United States Post Office in Rochester for 32 years. On September 14, 1957, he married Marcella (Poldervaard) Johnson, ‘the best wife he ever had’, (one example of Pete’s silly sense of humor!) in Greenleafton, MN. Together they had three sons.
He enjoyed watching his six grandchildren growing up, fishing and spending time on the lake, attending Bluegrass festivals, playing card games, pitching horseshoes, cheering for the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He was a charter member of Church of the Savior.
Pete is survived by his wife, Marcella; his three sons, Bruce, of Rochester, MN, Mark, of Rochester, MN, and Todd (Barb) of Bessemer, Michigan; and six grandsons, Justin, Nathan and Logan (Bruce’s sons), Shane (Mark’s son), and Connor and Drew (Todd and Barb’s sons). He is also survived by a sister Mrs. Peter Jones (Marlys), of Prior Lake, MN, and a brother Gary (Linda) Johnson of Rochester, and a brother-in-law Raymond Becker of Nodine, MN. He was a cherished uncle, cousin, and friend to many others.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Mrs. David (Leora) Lidtke, Mrs. James (Ramona) Pisney, and Mrs. Raymond (Phyllis) Becker.
A visitation will be held in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester on Wednesday, June 20 from 5 pm to 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at Church of Savior in southeast Rochester, on Thursday June 21 at 11 am, with visitation beginning at 10 am. Burial at Grandview Memorial Gardens will follow Thursday’s service, as well as a luncheon to follow at Macken Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be to Church of the Savior; 971 16th Street SE, Rochester, MN 55904.
