Paul Howard Mainz

Paul H. Mainz Obituary

The funeral for Paul Howard Mainz will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rochester officiated by Pastor Carl-Eric Gentes. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00- 8:00 PM Tuesday, November 18th in the River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home, Rochester and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Paul Mainz, age 61, died peacefully at his home Friday, November 14, 2014 following a sudden cardiac event.

He was born April 5, 1953, at Watertown, Wisc. to Howard and Carol (Rollefson) Mainz. He grew up in Oconomowoc, Wisc. where he attended grade school and high school. He was a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. and sang in the St. Olaf Choir, at the time under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Jennings. He worked as a bus driver for Jefferson Bus Lines, and later moved to Rochester to manage the bus depot.

On May 14, 1988 he married Joleen Marie Hegland at Arendahl Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, Minn. The couple had previously met at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester. In 1991 he partnered with his wife in the financial services business and subsequently provided tax preparation services.

Paul was an avid golfer, having golfed in 43 states. He took pride in having consecutively golfed the past 179 months. He also enjoyed playing tennis and was a proud shareholder of the Green Bay Packers. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rochester, serving in various capacities including musician, playwright and director. Much of his work was done under the name of his own production company, Seatadapants®.

Paul will be remembered by those who loved him as an unrelenting force for prodding talent from those around him.  His infectious enthusiasm was irresistible. He wrote and produced four Biblical melodramas at Good Shepherd Church, four dinner theatre productions, and for four years directed a community wide interfaith musical production of The Promise, a play about the life of Christ.

Paul was well-grounded and a visionary. Always funny, yet sincere, Paul usually had a joke to share. He was always planning the next event. Paul loved to travel with his family, carving out special trips with each of them, and was known as the “human GPS” for his superior navigation skills. He was devoted to his wife and loved his children and grandchild deeply.

He is survived by his wife, Joleen; his daughter, Elizabeth Anne (Andrew LaFave) Mainz of Ventura, Calif.; his two sons, Erik Paul Mainz of Minneapolis and Elliot Paul Mainz of Rochester; his grandson, Patrick Steven LaFave; his two sisters, Sharyll (Phillip) Smith of St. Louis Park, Minn. and Diane (Alan) Amans of Amery, Wisc., along with several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

To Paul's family from the Toogood family, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

We have many fond memories of Paul from "The Promise", and other events as well.

For myself: I loved Paul's sense of humor, and will never forget being with him during choir at Bethel and the fun we had singing the high parts as we sat behind the sopranos and altos during practice and also on Sunday mornings.

Tammie and I were thankful to have Paul sing at our wedding.

May Paul's memory always live on in all of our hearts.

Paul -  Rest in Peace with Christ.

We hear you singing and joking with others who have gone home to be with Christ.  Say hello to Millard Strand and the gang.

To Paul's family, We were so saddened and shocked by the death of Paul. He was always so much fun to be around. He had the best sense of humor and usually had a story and was always ready to share a laugh with everyone he met. I know you all have many great memories of him and keep them close to your heart.

Love,

Merlin and Darnell Dunham

Paul touched so many people, he made us all laugh, he made us all better, especially those of us at GSC congregation. I will miss the spur of the moment projects, his personality, and his sense of humor, that was infectious to us all. What a great loss to family, friends and the people of GSC.

Hmmm, melodramas & dinner theater in Heaven. Yep, he can do that too!

Moving on to the Final Act, Paul, you will be missed by many, remembered & loved by all.

God bless,

Jay
