Patrick (Pat) O’Connor

Patrick (Pat) John O’Connor
June 5, 1950 – May 23, 2025

Patrick (Pat) John O’Connor, a celebrated boxer and cherished brother and friend, passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 74.

Born in Rochester, Minnesota, on June 5, 1950, Pat was the beloved son of John (Jack) O’Connor and Valetta Gerber O’Connor. He graduated from Mayo High School in 1968 and from an early age displayed the fierce determination and competitive spirit that would define his life.

  • Pat’s boxing career began almost as soon as he could walk, sparring with his brother Dan as a toddler. By age 15, he had already made a name for himself in the ring,
  • 1966 Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Featherweight champion.
  • 1967 Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Welterweight champion.
  • 1967 National Golden Gloves Welterweight champion.
  • 1968 Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Jr. Middleweight champion.
  • Upon winning the National Golden Gloves at 16 Pat was presented with the Key to the City of Rochester upon his return. He proudly represented the United States in the Pan American Games and made the bold decision to turn down an Olympic opportunity to pursue a professional career. Pat rose through the ranks to be ranked #3 in the world as a light heavyweight boxer. Throughout his boxing journey, he fought alongside and against notable names such as Duane Horsman, Rafael Rodriguez, Andy Kendall, and Denny Moyer.
  • Amateur Record 150-10
  • Pro Record 41 Wins, 6 Losses, 19 KOs

In 2013, Pat was honored with induction into the Minnesota Boxing Hall of Fame—a fitting tribute to his contributions and legacy in the sport. He also gave back to the community he loved, offering guidance and support at the 4th Street Boxing Gym.

Beyond the ring, Pat was previously married to Barbara Brandenburg, with whom he shared a son, Joshua. He later married Diane Owen, who preceded him in death in 2022.

Pat’s final years were marked by his courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia, challenges he faced with the same grit he brought to the ring.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Valetta O’Connor, and his wife, Diane. He is survived by his son Joshua (Lisa) O’Connor; grandchildren Grant and Sarah O’Connor; brother Dan (Deb) O’Connor; nephew Shaun (Jenny) O’Connor; niece Kristen Stellmaker; and grand-nephews and niece, Logan, Sam, Jack, Max, Ben, and Gracelyn.

Pat will be remembered for his powerful punch and accolades in the boxing world. He fought every round of life with strength and heart, and his legacy will live on through those who knew and loved him.

Memorials are suggested to Raphael’s gym, One Punch Boxing, 125 Elton Hills Dr NW, Rochester, MN 55901
