Patricia “Patty” Griffin

Patricia Ann Griffin passed away peacefully on October 1st, 2020 after a short illness at St. Mary’s hospital.

Patricia Ann McGovern was born in Rochester, MN, on January 2, 1940 to Francis and Annabelle (Crosby) McGovern.  Patty married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, James P. Griffin, on August 18, 1962 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester. Patty graduated from Lourdes high school in 1958 where she was homecoming queen. She then attended Rochester Junior College and went on to work at the Mayo Clinic. She retired after over 20 years with the Mayo Radiology Dept.

Patty put family and faith above all. She raised five children and was the proud grandmother of twelve grandchildren. Patty was an avid sports enthusiast. She loved the Lourdes Eagles and all Minnesota sports teams.  Patty was a lifetime volunteer. She regularly volunteered at Lourdes and one of her favorite events was the Annual Lourdes Auction. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and volunteered in many roles enjoying her time as a member of the St. Joan of Arc Rosary Group.

Patty was very social and loved to entertain family and friends. Everyone was welcome in her home, where you would be greeted at a minimum with a cup of coffee.  Patty will be remembered for her holiday celebrations, and the good times had in her home by family and friends. One of patty’s favorite pastimes was to read a good book.  Patty took the time to talk to anyone and made friends with everyone.

Patty is survived by her Husband Jim of 58 years, daughters Stacey (Jim) Zell of Northfield, Amy (Mike) Thompson of Rochester, sons Jim (Heather), Joe (Michelle), Jay (Katie) all of Lakeville, grandchildren Erica and Michael Zell, Michaela and Griffin Thompson, Grace and Shane Griffin, Abbie, Ava, and Maggie Griffin, and Gavin, Darby, and Sully Griffin, and her brother Jim (Sue) McGovern of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson.

The Funeral Mass for Patty will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 11:00AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Father Jim Berning officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, October 6, 2020 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday. Burial will be at St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Simpson, MN.

Patty’s family extends a special “thank you” to the caregivers at Rochester Health East, the staff members of 7-Mary Brigh, and Hospice staff at St. Mary’s Hospital for their excellent care.

Memorials are preferred to the Lourdes High School Athletic Department, Mayo clinic development and research, and St. Francis of Assisi School.

You really know how special someone is to you when hearing of their passing takes your breath away.  The flood of wonderful memories of Mrs. Griffin (Patty) was overwhelming from her beautiful smile to her huge, warm hugs, to her full and joy-filled laugh.  This photo of her on this obituary is just how I remember her...what a beautiful woman.

I loved talking with Patty and got a kick out of how animated she was with her facial expressions and her hand gestures.  She was always so genuinely caring and interested when we spoke.  The neighborhood was just so much more joyful because of Patty Griffin.

Thankfully, her legacy lives on in her wonderful family.  Peace and healing to all of you as you navigate her passing.  I am sure that your happy memories will bring you great comfort.

Dear Jim and Families,

Sending most sincere condolences on Patty's passing.  Patty was always so good to us (my mom [Nancy Gilliland (McGovern], my sister Laura and I).  She was funny, fun and fun to be around.  I remember her well from my childhood and adolescent years and can hear her clearly saying "Well hello, Brent!  How's everything?".  She was just so nice!   I'm proud to be related to Patty and, of course, all the McGoverns!  Godspeed, Patty, and my very best wishes to Jim and all those who knew Patty and will hold her memory close.

Dear Mr. Griffin, Joe and family,

My thoughts are with you all at this very sad time and I offer you my sincere condolences. Mrs. Griffin raised a beautiful and much respected family in the Rochester community. She was an amazing person. My best to you all.

Sincerely, Ryan (in Australia)

I spent many days and nights at the Griffin home and always felt welcome. Patty's warm smile and twinkling eyes will be missed but never forgotten. A St. Patrick's day will never pass without me thinking of Amy and I celebrating with Patty and Jim and the gang. My heart goes out to the entire Griffin family.

My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to you Jim and your dear family.  Patty was our son Christopher's day care mom and she was like a second mom to him.  He loved coming to your house because of ALL of the kids being there. Your house was the neighborhood house to go to and have fun!! Patty was a fun and spunky lady, she had such a cute giggle/laugh!  God be with all of you at this time.  Sincerely, Bev Delisle
