Patricia Margaret Polt

Patricia Margaret Polt, 71, of Rochester, MN, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at home of natural causes.

Patty was born on August 1, 1948 in Binghamton, NY to Francis J. and Mary R. Polt. She graduated from John Marshall High School in 1966. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1971 with her Bachelor’s degree in French and English and went on to receive a Master’s degree in Business from the College of St. Thomas.

Patty lived almost exclusively in Rochester, MN with a brief stay in McAllen, TX for several years while working for IBM for whom she worked for over twenty years. She also had employment with BenchMark Electronics here in Rochester for 10 years and several years as a teacher at Lourdes High School. She primarily wrote the books and literature describing how to operate computers and electronic equipment for IBM and BenchMark Electronics.

Since retiring, Patty devoted a large amount of her time caring and advocating for her mother. She enjoyed immensely being around her nephews and their children.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Polt of Rochester, MN; brother, Thomas (Beverley) of Rochester, MN; nephews: Dustin (Tabitha) Manguson and their children: Aiden, Addison, Alexandra, and William of Onalaska, WI, Ryan (Carrie) Manguson and their children: Morgan, Paige, and Noah of Rochester, MN, Michael (Mary Hiles) Polt of Minneapolis, MN, and Gregory (Kenzie Hoadley) and their child Kynlee Kay Polt.

Patty was preceded in death by her father Francis J. Polt; sister and brother-in-law Frances A. and Addison J. Bryant.

Private family interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester. Due to current circumstances, a memorial mass will be held at a later date.

Condolences

The family of Patricia Margaret Polt has received the following condolences.

I worked with Pat on a couple of education and publication projects while we were both at IBM. She was always upbeat and gracious. Her sense of humor was contagious. I looked forward to our time together and enjoyed seeing her outside of IBM as well. Rest in peace, my kindred spirit friend.

i met Patty through the Livestrong program at the Y a few years ago. We soon became good friends and exercise ‘buddies’ at the Y.

Due to her dedication to her mother the past year we didn’t get to the Y as we once did.  When she couldn’t go, I didn’t go and visa versa.  I had called her and left a message just 3-4 days before I saw her name in the obituary page.  I was stunned!  I’m so sorry. I  am truly missing her and her easy, fun laughter.    She often spoke kindly/lovingly of her brother and nephews and their children. Such good memories.  And now I see her mom, Ruth, has joined her.  My condolences to you all.

                                                         Sincerely, Bobbi Schopp

Miss Polt (as we knew her at Lourdes High School in 1974) was a marvelous French teacher.  Although she demanded much from her students she gave us much in return - an understanding of the language and culture of French speaking countries.  I'll not forget the weeks spent listening to and translating the opera, Carmen.  To this day, when I hear the music, I think of her and thank her for opening my eyes and ears to such a beautiful work.

After university, with the knowledge of the French language she helped to instill, I was able to be a Peace Corps volunteer in Cote D'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), a French speaking country in West Africa.  I later spent time working in Haiti, again using my French skills.  I can truly say that Miss Polt made an incredible difference in my life.

To her family, know that I send my deepest condolences.
