Norma Lois McNary

Norma Lois McNary, 90 of Rochester passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on October 20, 2020 at The Waters on Mayowood.

Norma Lois Orth was born on November 8, 1929 to Clinton and Grace (O’Neil) Orth in Minneapolis, MN. She graduated from Redwood Falls, MN High School and the University of Minnesota, obtaining a degree in Home Economics. On August 4, 1951 she married the love of her life, James “Jim” McNary in Windom, MN. Together, they made Rochester their home, raising their seven children.

Norma worked with The Reading Center, tutoring children with Dyslexia. She loved to give others the gift of reading. She also volunteered at Mayo Clinic, St. Marys’ Hospital, the Dorothy Day House, the Women’s Prison in AZ, and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and School. Norma was a devoted wife, mother, nana, and friend always putting others first. After surviving seven teenagers, she and Jim enjoyed wintering in Sun City West, AZ with their friends.

She is survived by her husband Jim of Rochester, her children Bill (Susan) McNary, Ann (John) Mike, Sheila (Tom) Hayes, Cathy (Ted) Pletta, Patty (Jay) Vavra, Maggie (Tom) Corley, Jim (Tiffany) McNary, twenty-four grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren (with more on the way!), and her sister Marion Isaak.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Mary M. Greene and Donna Streich.

Due to the pandemic, a Private Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Catholic in Rochester, Minnesota. The church will be live-streaming the Mass beginning at 10:30a.m. Click here to watch the live stream: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTlCh08Fa1J4JmCGHBWwIhw/

Condolences

The family of Norma Lois McNary has received the following condolences.

For some reason or other, I woke up this morning wondering how Jim & Norma were doing. I went on-line and entered Norma's name & up came her obituary.  I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to Jim and the Mc Nary Family.  I have nothing but pleasant memories of Norma, but had not seen her in many years.  The last time may have been when she & Jim visited us in Sierra Vista, AZ, years ago. I can sypathasize with the Mc Nary Family because my wife has struggled with Alzheimer's for ten years and has been on hospice status for the past two years. BTW, Jim and I have been friends since grade school at Nativity, Boy Scouts Troop 67, and Cretin High. Nearly all of our old friends have passed away and I do hope to see Jim before we "cross over the river and rest on the other side".  It looks like Norma and Jim have a wonderful family. God bless.  Bill

My whole family felt the loss of Norma, or I should say, Mrs.McNary.  Norma tutored two of our children, Shannon and Patrick through the Reading Center.  She was truly a blessing.  She even gave up 2-3 early mornings to tutor Patrick before school.  And she came to their Open House when they finished high school.  What a lady.  She gave so much of herself to others.  Norma will always have a place in our hearts and prayers.  Love, The Blegen family.

We were deeply moved by Norma’s beautiful Mass of Christian Burial (we watched from our home in Washington state). Oh, to leave such a powerful legacy as Norma left! She was a woman of grace, substance, integrity, compassion and love .... truly a godly woman. Please feel our love and prayers as you walk this time of grief. What a blessing she was to the world. Be at peace.
Sincerely , Mike and barbara

With love and our deepest sympathies: Ryan, Fay, Liam, and Landon Kelley

Dear McNarys All,

My deepest condolences on the loss of Norma, your wonderful wife, loving mother, and beloved Nana. She was a gift to the St John's, Lourdes, and Rochester community, sharing so generously her loving kindness and joyful laughter with all of us, deeply enriching our lives. What a dear, dear person.

Mr. McNary, thinking of you especially, and how you and Norma extended your love and support far and wide, making a meaningful difference in the lives of so many. May Norma's bright shining spirit comfort you and your wonderful family always.

Dear Cathy, Maggie, and family, your Mom was very special; always so nice and such a beautiful smile. We are so sorry for the loss of your Mom. Peace, Todd and Annie Young

To the McNary family. Thank you for allowing me to make Norma more beautiful than she already was. It was my pleasure to do her hair the time she was at the Water. I am sending my prayers and love to all of you.

Hi Patty - your mom made your parties exciting and was so welcoming and fun. She was an amazing woman. Condolences to you and your family. May her memories bring you joy. <3 Teresa Mayer

Jeff and I are so very thankful for Norma’s beautiful life and her great legacy of love, faith, and service. We were blessed to get to meet Norma at our son in-law, Brendan’s, high school graduation. We wish we had known her.

We do know that through wonderful Maggie, our beloved Brendan, and the rest of this great family, Norma’s spirit will carry on. Her devotion to her family is obvious in how it is lived out in her children and grandchildren.

She is now running streets of gold and will be there to greet you all.

Our Sincere Love, Jeff and Gregg Foxworthy

Dear Jim and family,

I am sorry for the loss of your wonderful wife and mother.

mNorma (and you, Jim) defined for me friends through thick and thin. You were both there for my Mom in her illness and Dad in his sadness after Mom’s death.

Norma was kind and full of joy. I will always treasure her memory.

Heaven gained a wonderful addition with her death. I hope you will be able to focus mostly on the countless great memories during her vibrant years. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jim and family,

We both wish to extend our sincere sympathies to you at the passing of Norma. We hold you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and wish you the peace of our Lord during this time.

Jim and all of the McNary family,

Wayne and I are sorry for your loss of Norma.  May you find peace in the many memories you hold and may this be a special time of recognizing her important and lasting impact in each of your lives.

I recall fondly when we lived at Waterford how you both welcomed our young grandsons when they wanted to come visit “Wucy”

Blessings on your celebration of her life.

Wayne and Sharon Dunemann

Our family sends our deepest condolences to the entire McNary Family. One of my memories go way back to a Christmas invitation to join Jim and Norma for Christmas celebration. We had recently moved to Rochester from Chicago, Joe was working that holiday and Norma called to invite myself and daughter Aileen to their family Christmas meal. What a gracious woman. Thank you

Aunt Norma was such a compassionate, loving person, always putting others first. She was a beautiful role model for service to others,  her strong faith and deep love of her family!  Our love and deepest sympathies to our cousins and Uncle Jim. You now have another angel in heaven watching over you. God bless you all.

Love, Maryellen and Lynn and family

May light perpetual shine upon Norma. May her soul rest in peace and may her family and friends find comfort in the memories created.
