Norene Betty Elliott

The funeral for Norene B. Elliott will be held at 11am Friday, November 18, 2016 in the Memorial Chapel at Christ United Methodist Church with Pastor Katy Lee officiating.  Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery of Rochester. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Elliott died at age 90 on Monday, November 14, 2016.  She was born April 6, 1926 in Primghar, IA to Arthur and Isoline Anderson.  She was one of five children.  She graduated from Cornell College with a degree in Music Education in 1947 where she also met and married Leighton E. Rickert of Clinton, IA.  They lived in Austin MN where they had three children. Mr. Rickert, a teacher, died in 1958. Norene returned to school at Winona State for a further degree in Elementary Education.  She taught kindergarten in Austin and also, with others, opened a store featuring art and handmade gifts.  In 1961 she married James C. Elliott. They resided in Austin where Mr. Elliott managed a Red Owl Grocery and where they had a child. They moved to Rochester in 1969.  There they built a house and acquired several gas stations and income properties.  Mrs. Elliott, together with several other Rochester women, opened a knitting store and taught courses in knitting, rug hooking and other sewing techniques.  She, together with Hjordy Mlinar of Austin, organized and lead annual tours to New York City. She was a member of United Methodist Women, P.E.O., and Rochester Area Rug Hookers.

She is survived by: Chad Elliott of Minnieska, MN, David Elliott (Lisa, and their daughters Taylor and Whitney) of Rochester, Paula Elliott (James Burgess) of New York, NY, Tod Elliott (and his daughters Clair and Emmy) of Portland, OR and Gordon Elliott (Beverly and their sons) of Pittsburg, KS.

Condolences

The family of Norene Betty Elliott has received the following condolences.

I would like to offer my deepest condolences to your family.  In times like these the Bible have proven to be of great comfort.  The Bible book of John chapter 5 verses 28 and 29 holds out the hope of a resurrection for our loved ones who have past; and Joshua chapter 21 verse 45 let's us know that God fulfills his promises.  I hope that these Bible verses will bring your family some comfort.

My sincere sympathy to the Family of Norene Elliott.  I have known Norene for a long time and she was a lovely talented lady.

Mary Sheridan, PEO Sister

I first met Norene many years ago when I took a needlepoint class at the Whiffletree.  That was just the beginning of the many things I have learned from her.  We spent many years together as members of the Rochester Needlework Guild where she was always generous with her ideas and expertise.  A favorite memory I have is when she and I were at my home making centerpieces for a Guild spring luncheon.  There wasn't much blooming in my garden, and I was discouraged, but Norene was able to use what we found, including the invasive weed Creeping Charlie, to make lovely arrangements for our luncheon.  She was one of the most creative people I have ever known.

Dear Paula, Dave and all,

It is with such sorrow that I learn of Norene's death through my Rochester PEO sisters.  I moved away from Rochester 8 years ago, now living in Tucson.  If I were there in MN, I'd be first in line to give you all my fond memories of the many hours and days I've spent with Norene.

For her service to be in the chapel, with the wall hanging that we worked on for a year, under her guidance, is so fitting.  Her creativity inspired countless of we beginners and her love for adventure meant all those trips to New York City were wonderful experiences...we would still be going at midnight on those trips( which Paula added to with her gifts that she shared with all of us.)

I've missed Norene for the years away from Rochester; many of us who moved away but shared our lives with her via church, PEO, the needlework guild, have been sharing stories of what she meant to all of us.  We are all with you in spirit as we say a final goodbye......just wishing I could be there to say all of this in person.

Dear Paula, So sorry to read of your mother's passing. Seeing her picture I do recall her and she seems familiar even after all these decades. Dan and I lost our mother in 2013 and there is not a day where my memories don't return of much-loved Milly. In fact, after her death and to this day some refer to Dan and myself as " oh, yah- Milly's boys". I know your mom was held in such esteem and fondness as well. I do wish you the fondest of memories as yet another passage is endured. Take good care, and as travels bring you near let's reconvene the 5th Avenue bunch! David Kane

I was saddened to learn of Norene's passing.  She taught me how to rug hook years ago first through community education here in Rochester and then out of her house. She had a lot of energy for her craft and really enjoyed teaching new students.  I will always remember her encouraging me to 'try that bright color in your hooked piece'...'just throw it in there and see what happens'.  I give her credit for my abilities in rug hooking today.

I will always have fond memories of Norene.

My thoughts and prayers are with the children of Norene.
