Michele Joy Schmidt

Michele J. Schmidt, age 60, passed away peacefully due to complications from her long battle with cancer on Thursday, July 9, 2015. Her husband Brad and daughter Becky were at her side.

Michele Joy Smith was born on October 8, 1954 to Harold and Jean Smith in Fargo, ND. She graduated from Shanley Catholic High School in 1972 and later graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree with Speech Pathology. She obtained her Masters degree in Audiology from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. While in the Audiology program, she met Bradley “Brad” Schmidt of Stevens Point. The couple was married on June 23, 1979 in Fargo, ND. Upon moving to Rochester, Michele served as an Educational Audiologist for the Rochester and Surrounding School Districts. Brad was employed at the Mayo Clinic in the Finance Department. Michele and Brad served as caring foster parents for Olmsted County for over 12 years. Michele was a veracious reader, doting pet owner, and avid and talented cook who enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She had an artistic eye which she applied to cross-stitch, gardening, and home décor. The couple spent many years enjoying the Wisconsin north woods. They were charter members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Rochester, and Michele cherished Franciscan values.

She is survived by her husband of over 36 years Bradley of Rochester, her daughter Rebecca “Becky” Schmidt of Calmar, IA, a brother James (Karen) Smith of Omaha, NE, and a nephew Ryan Smith of Omaha, NE.

She is predeceased by her parents.

The Funeral Mass for Michele will be held at 12:00PM on Monday, July 13, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Rochester with Father Tom Loomis officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening July 12, 2015 from 4:00pm until 7:00pm in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the Mass at Holy Spirit.

Memorials are preferred to Holy Spirit Catholic Church or the Sisters of St. Francis in Rochester, MN.

Macken Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Online condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com

Condolences

The family of Michele Joy Schmidt has received the following condolences.

Dear Schmidt family -

I have just recently learned of your loss, and am so sorry to learn of Michele's death.  I had the pleasure of working with Michele at the ESC building for several years. She had a widely varied expertise in her field and was a wonderful resource to us.  More importantly, I appreciated her straight talk and her big heart.  Thanks for sharing her.

Wishing you well,

Marla Eagen

Brad, on behalf of all the Missouri Braddishs'; I offer our condolences and prayers for you and your daughter. Although I never met your wife your kindness and hospitality were very appreciated by myself and my brothers.  I know she must have had the same qualities as you have shown to us and we once again send our prayers and thoughts.

Dear Brad and Becky,  Joyce informed us about your very sad, sad news of Michelle's passing.  Please accept our prayers and deepest sympathy.  What a role model she was for all of us with her courage, strength and determination! .....  She fought hard and was always so positive. ....  Sad that she didn't have more time to enjoy her new north woods home.  Please know you are both in our prayers and you grieve during this most difficult time.  Love and tears, Tom and Jean Choate

Dear Brad and Becky,

So sorry to learn of Michele's passing.  I enjoyed many state network educational audiology meetings sitting near Michele, and I always looked forward to her sunny disposition.  She always lit up when mentioning either of you!  Thinking of you,

Amy Packer, Educational Audiologist, Northern Lights Special Ed. Coop., Cloquet

My deepest condolences to your and your family, Brad.  While I did not know your wife, Michelle, it was very apparent that she was a strong and loving force in your life.  I hope you find peace in the coming months and find the comfort and support of your family and friends at this time.  Take care, Diann Berry

My deepest sympathy to Brad, Becky and the entire family.  Michele fought a long, courageous battle with Brad and Becky always there to support her.  She will be missed but the memories of her smile, her cooking, her faith and her optimistic outlook on life will console us all.   May God bless the Schmidt family and all of us as we remember this remarkable woman.  Be at peace and know the thoughts and prayers of many are with you, Brad & Becky.

Brad and Becky,

My sincere condolences on Michele's passing. She was always gracious and a terrific hostess. I always appreciated how you both opened up your home to many. Best of all, she was one of the few people I know who could keep Brad in check.

I pray God's strength and grace to you as you mourn the loss of Becky in this world.

Becky,

I was so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Although I had not seen her in many years, I remember her as a kind and gracious lady with a wonderful sense of humor, much like her daughter. I know that she must have been so proud of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your dad as you mourn her passing and celebrate her life. Because of her, to this day, I never put anything sharper than my elbow in my ear.

My Dear Darling Becky:

My most heart-felt and the deepest condolence to you and your beautiful family!!! This is rather unexpected and your Mom has left too soon.....  Losing such a gracious lady, beautiful, loving, caring, capable and unconditionally supportive mother like yours is unthinkable, unbearable and extremely painful to you, your Dad and your extended family, and to me.  You know that your mother has rested in peace and perfect health in Heaven now after a wonderful good life in MN and heroic battle against breast cancer. She is looking after you and your Dad from the high above now....  It is not easy for you to shoulder such a heavy burden at such a young age. It is traumatic and unexpected. Now you must take the best care of yourself and your Dad.

Your Mom is very special, kind and generous, absolutely capable, caring and she was a beautiful person inside and outside. I have always respected, cherished and admired her and her amazing accomplishments in life - Michelle has you as her legacy.   I remember her high energy, high integrity, decency, kindness, loving heart, friendly and gentle smile, able hands, positive can-do attitude and unfailingly politeness. I feel so blessed to be given opportunity to get to know your beautiful Mother, to look up to her, respect and love her all these years.  Please take care of yourself, your Dad at this extraordinarily difficult and overwhelmingly painful time. Please do not hesitate to let me know if I can be of any service, assistance and help to you in anyway as I can.

LOVE, LOVE and LOVE you unconditionally.

            Respectfully yours,

Your Lab mother - Amy
