Michael (Mickey) A. Reed

Michael (Mickey) Allan Reed -Byron

One-of-a-kind. Mickey will be remembered for his engaging personality, the sparkle in his eyes, his handlebar mustache, his Santa Clause beard and his “up to something” contagious grin. He could strike up a conversation with a stranger on the street and he always knew how to have fun. He loved to wear Hawaiian shirts and true shorts “not-longs” as he jokingly called them.  He had the best hugs, the worst dad jokes and never missed an opportunity to have fun.

Mickey was born to Kenneth Charles Reed and Lois Nigon Reed Holland on March 21,1956 in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.  They moved to Rochester where he attended St. Pius Grade school and graduated from Lourdes High School in 1974. Mickey was an incredible athlete and excelled in football, basketball and track & field. He was class president and a member of the National Honor Society. He later was honored as a member of the Lourdes Hall of Fame in 2018.

Mickey received a football scholarship at Mankato State and later transferred to South Dakota State University where he played linebacker.  In his senior year, he was unanimously voted team captain.

He met his wife, Jan Bride at SDSU. Unknowingly a pinch and a slug at Horts introduced them to each other. This lead to friendship, dating and later marriage in 1979.  They moved to Minnesota and settled in Byron where they resided for 44 years. He was a devoted father to his two children, always attending their activities, coaching teams, was a founder of the Byron Booster Club and implementing all-comers track meets. He enjoyed watching his grandson, Donovan, who is following in his footsteps in both football and track and field.  Mickey loved spending time with his granddaughter, Ava.

Mickey was hired as a firefighter in Rochester in 1983.  Mickey loved driving ladder truck 42 and received the safe driver award.  He enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow firefighters and retired in 2011 after 28 years on the force.

Mickey drove school bus for the Byron School District, first as an activity driver and later a route driver for 11 years.  He took pride in driving bus for his students and was known as the “beloved bus driver”. He saved the life of one of his riders and was chosen as the Bus Driver of the Year.

Every October, Mickey would travel to South Dakota for a pheasant hunt with friends and family and bring his hunting dog. He always got his limit. They stayed at the farmhouse “Huron Hilton” and later graduated to the “Ritz Cavour” farmhouse where he enjoyed many fond and happy times. In the spring he also loved bagging a turkey.

Mickey was an avid golfer and enjoyed annual trips to Kansas with a few of his firefighter buddies.  He loved entering local tournaments and often won the longest ball contest. A golfing highlight was a trip to Scotland with his son, Jesse.

Mickey had a passion for nature and created baskets of flowers to beautify their home.  He enjoyed the monarch butterflies who would show up at the butterfly garden he planted.  His bird feeders were always overflowing and attracting a variety of Minnesota birds.

Mickey enjoyed a great beer and loved attending breweries to enjoy a drink with a friend.   He was thrilled when friends would bring him Yuengling from the east coast.

Mickey could and would do anything he set his mind to do.  He built two houses for his family with little building experience. With his abilities to fix almost anything he would help family and friends when they had a need. He taught himself to sew a robe for his sister-in-law’s Christmas gift and he enjoyed cooking and baking.

Mickey is survived by his wife Jan, children, Jesse Reed (Luisa), Kelli Reed, grandchildren Donovan Reed, Ava Reed, and baby Scarlet (arriving soon), his mother, Lois Holland, brothers KC Reed (special friend Joy Duellman), Rich Holland (Sue), and sister, Maggie Hallock, father-in-law, Joe Bride, sister-in-law’s, Joan Jensen (Dave), Julie Foley (Brad), brothers-in-law Jay Bride (Julie Ellis), Jeff Bride, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins from the Nigon, Reed, and Bride clans.  He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Reed, stepfather, Joe Holland, mother-in law, Jeanne Bride, and sister-in-law, Cindy Reed.

Mickey Reed died on Monday, October 16, 2023, at the age of 67. The manner of his death does not change the events of his wonderful life, his friendships, and his absolute love of his family.

Friends and Family may call on Friday October 27, 2023, between 4-7 PM in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th St SE, Rochester, MN 55904.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 28th, 2023, at 11 AM with visitation starting at 10 AM at St. Pius X Church, 1315 12th Avenue NW, Rochester, MN, 55901.

Condolences

The family of Michael (Mickey) A. Reed has received the following condolences.

Our deepest condolences to the Reed family. My wife, Connie, and I were a year ahead of Mickey. My memories are from our times from track, football and Boy Scouts. What a kind, talented, curious, and always friendly person he was to everyone. His obituary describes a rich and successful life.

Mike and Connie

Dear Reed Family,

I was so sorry to hear of Mickey’s death. I was two years behind him at Saint Pius and Lourdes, and I always looked up to him as an excellent athlete and nice guy. Despite his physical stature and success in sports, he was always kind and engaging with younger kids. In our adult years I enjoyed seeing him around Rochester and at games, catching up on various shared experiences. The obituary is beautiful, and describes my memory of him well—the sparkle in his eyes and quick wit. Your family is in my prayers in this difficult time of loss. I hope you can stay focused mostly on your countless great memories with this very good man.

I can’t even begin to say how sorry I am for all of your lovely family to have lost such a wonderful man. I don’t believe there was any person he came in contact with that he was not kind to. God Bless you all and will be praying for all of you as well as Mickey.

Jan, I am so sorry for your family's loss.

Jan and family

A good man, in every aspect, was Mickey
With a kind and generous manner

Just knowing he had your back meant all the world

He was beautiful

Dear Jan, Jesse, Kelli, and family,

We are so sorry about Mickey's passing.  He was such a wonderful member of the family who will be truly missed by all who knew him.  We feel fortunate to have shared great conversation with him last month, and to hear him talk of the tremendous love and pride he had for all of you.  May the precious memories you have bring you comfort in the days ahead, and may the love surrounding you bring you peace.

With love,

Shannon & Brendan

Reed Family,

On behalf of the Radke Family and the Byron Wrestling Family, our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family. I have so many fond memories of the conversations we had around school. He truly was a unique soul…..thinking of you all during this difficult time.

Dear Reed Family,

My sincere condolences to you all with this unimaginable loss. Mick was a high school classmate of mine and my husband also knew him growing up as a neighbor and in Boy Scouts together. I will always remember his smile, the tinkle in his eyes and his humor. I looked forward to working on another reunion gathering with him as we had so many times over these last 49 years. I am sending virtual hugs and support as I am not able to attend. Prayers for healing.

RIP Mick, you have touched many lives and will always be close in our hearts.

Dan and Rita ( Sell) Marquardt

Mick and I were classmates all through our years at St. Pius and Lourdes. We both also worked summers at Assisi Heights. He always made work fun, and we managed to squeeze in a happy hour or two at the Outrigger after work. Imagine running in to Mick in Deadwood, SD standing in front of the Number 10 Saloon! I remember his magnetic personality, amazing sense of humor, the grin and the goofy chuckle that sometimes accompanied it, and of course the now famous mustache.

My heartfelt condolences to Jan and the family. He will be sorely missed.

Aunt Lois and family

Our deepest condolences and prayers are with you and your family. We will ask the monks at St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer to pray for Mickey and all your family.

Mickey and I really hit it off at Jesse’s wedding festivities. Although I knew him for a very short time, it felt like we’ve been friends for a long time. I’m deeply saddened by the news of his passing. May he rest easy.

 Dear Jan and family

I am so sorry for your loss.  Know that we and hundreds of others are thinking and praying for you and your family in your time of sorrow.

Mickey was a great and good man.  I remember him as a keystone of the Lourdes High School Class of 1974, and as an essential member of a circle of friends during and after college. I will never forget, and always cherish, his memory.

Peace to your all.

We are so very sorry to hear of Mickey's loss! He was such a neat guy, he was one of my dad's favorite co-workers and golfing buddies. I have fond memories of Mickey from times when I would visit my dad at the fire hall. May his memory be a blessing to all who feel his loss.

A donation has been made in Mickey's memory to SE MN NAMI.

Fraternally,

We are truly so sorry for your loss.  Mickey was definitely "one of a kind" and he will be missed so much.  He was - and will always be- my son, Teagan's favorite bus driver.  Many times, I would stop by Mickey's bus to say a quick hello on my way out of work.  I still find myself looking for him.  We are grateful for our wonderful memories of Mickey.

My sincere condolences to your family! Prayers for peace and strength during this difficult time.

My condolences to you Reed family

I will always have fond memories of Mickey of him as he was always smiling and when he came into the Emergency Dept with a smile on his face saying Hi Kid; how the heck are you? I'll always remember his voice!
I got to know he better playing in golf tournaments and the fun memories we had!

His demeanor was always so positive; uplifting and a JOY!  Truly a gem!

He will be greatly missed

Always know that he will have left an impression with each person he ever met!

You're in my thoughts; prayers to you and your family.

Mickey truly was one of a kind. He was my bus driver for many years. I looked forward to seeing him everyday. He’d greet me every morning with a smile and a, “good morning Mr. Underwood”. His smile was contagious. He would always ask how my brother and I how we did in sports and we’d see him at a lot of the games. You could tell he really cared about us and how we did. Was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Thinking of all of the family during this difficult time. Mickey will be missed by all.

Jan and family,

I didn't know Mickey well, but I remember his kindness as a Byron bus driver and Byron parent.  I recall one bus ride in particular when he was transporting our BHS music students to Lourdes High School, and he complimented me on my correct pronunciation of "Lourdes"!

Please take care of each other and know that the world loved Mickey.

We are so so sorry to hear of Mickey’s passing.  Nyssa was one of his bus kids and he was truly the “beloved bus driver”. We enjoyed him so much!  What a wonderful person..  he will be greatly missed.  Prayers to all of you❤️

Jan and family,

I was so sad to hear that Mickey passed away ….and so soon after your mother. That is tough. Your obituary is so thoughtful and totally reflects what a generous person he was… a real character with many talents. That mustache did make him stand out. Ha! He was so kind and friendly. I didn’t realize he had such diverse interests. He gave to his family, many friends and students as well as the community. What a blessing.

though I didn’t spend much time with him, I remember him well. I know you had many wonderful times together. God be with you as you grieve his loss.

Much love, from Judy & my husband Jeff

May sincere condolences to Jan and the entire family. I worked with Mickey at Station 4 up until my retirement in 2009. He and I manned the front seats of Ladder 42. I was the Captain but Mickey was the man in charge of the truck. I will certainly miss him. He was a lamb in bear’s clothing being a bit furry. May Micheal (Mickey) Rest in peace.

Rest in Peace, Mick.  We'll miss your smile, quick wit, but more importantly, your friendship.  My memories of you will be cherished forever.  God bless my friend.

I knew Mickey from hauling concrete to him and Todd for their side jobs back in the 90's. After i started my own drywall taping business, Mickey found numerous jobs for me to do with fellow fire fighters and friends. He was a Big man with a bigger heart. I will forever cherish my memories of him. My thoughts and prayers are with the Family.

My sympathy to the Reed family on the loss of Mickey.  May you know lots of people are thinking of and praying for you.

May he rest in peace.

Jan, Jesse, Kelli, Donovan , and Ava,

I hated to hear the news of Mick's passing.

He checked all the boxes. Family man, tough guy, sportsman, outdoorsman, big hearted...Certainly a friend to all that new him.

I recall an incident in the Blackhill's years ago when Mick tried to antagonize an untethered Bison.

The rumor was that the only reason the Bison didn't attack was because it was jealous of Mick's mustache.

I'm sure many more stories of this nature will surface in the weeks and months ahead and they will all make us smile and think of Mick.

Count me in. Anytime I think of Mick (or see a Bison) be assured there will be a smile on my face.

I hate that he is gone, but, I loved the guy and all he stood for. I hope someday, someone can say the same thing about me.

Kindest thoughts to all,

Cousin Dave

What a beautifully written memoir of such a fantastic man. I loved and idolized Mickey in so many ways but mostly for his humor, character, wits, and his easy going fun loving self. I feel So lucky to Have worked with Mickey his last few years on the department and always enjoyed running into him and Jan out and about. My heart is broken for Jan and the family and the hundreds of other friends he had. The world is a darker place without Mickey but the light he shined during his time on earth will always be remembered and endearing to all he met. Love and miss you already buddy.

Sherrie and I send our Condolences and Prayers. Mickey was a Great older classmate- Great Co-worker and friend. RIP my friend.

I first met Mick through our love of pointing dogs.  Mick had recently acquired a French Pointing Spaniel from a mutual friend and that friend recommended Mickey join our bird dog training group.  We became friends almost immediately.  Later, after he found out I retired from the Rochester Federal Medical Center, he called me saying there were openings for school bus drivers at the Byron bus garage.  At his urging, I applied and was hired based on Mickey's recommendation.  Only later did I find that the reason he called me was because he wanted some time off and they were short on drivers which he admitted with a smile and that Mickey Reed smirk on his face.   Mickey was one-of-a-kind.  We used to announce to each other on the bus radio, early during our routes, about the glorious sunrise that morning.  Or, maybe, a "sundog" we'd seen.  He did have a love of nature.  Mickey coordinated the bus drivers "weekly giving" to the State of Minnesota through the Minnesota Lottery.  We never did win anything.  Maybe our "winnings" were to treasure Mickey's friendship with all of us at the bus garage.  We will all miss him.  I will miss him.  Godspeed my friend.  RIP.

Gunnar

Jan and family,

My prayers an thoughts to you and your entire family.  There was never a time when I ran onto Mickey that he didn't want to chat and catch up.  His positivity and encouraging comments always made you feel good as you left the conversations with him.  The world needs more Mickey Reeds and his time on this earth with all of us is truly a blessing.  Hold the memories of Mickey close to your hearts during this difficult time.  God Bless Mickey.

Mick and I were locker mates throughout high school.  Every year we would some how figure out the other person's locker combo enabling us to pull off locker destruction, decoration, and pranks.  Such a good guy with a contagious smile.  My heart goes out to his family!

Mickey was a teammate at SDSU. He was a good man. My favorite memory has nothing to do with football but involves a duck hunt he and I went on at Lake Whitewood. We shot a lot of ducks and perhaps were more than a few over our limit. This was not intentional but an innocent mistake of confusing redheads and canvasbacks. When we got back to Mick’s vehicle we found some creative hiding spots for the extras and made our way back to Brookings. I will miss Mickey.

So very sorry for your families loss. Jan and all, I'm sending prayers and hugs for strength as you each go through your grieving. Remember to share many stories with each other as you grieve.

I am heartbroken for your family at this difficult time. Lots of Love to all of you as you move through this difficult time.
