A Celebration Of Life service may occur at a later time once restrictions are lifted.

Michael Francis Hanley, 64, of Rochester, MN, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at Seasons Hospice after a long battle with cancer.

Michael (Mike) was born on February 23, 1956, in Dubuque, Iowa to Farrell (Frank) and Shirley Hanley. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1974. He joined the United States Navy, serving aboard the cruiser USS Albany (CG-10) and aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) as a Fire Control Technician, completing his service as a Petty Officer Second Class. He married Mary Krueger at the David Adams Memorial Chapel, Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia, on June 30, 1975, and they moved to Rochester in 1978 following his Honorable discharge. Mike worked at IBM in Rochester from 1978 to 2001 as a Senior Lab Specialist across multiple divisions. He worked at JDS Uniphase from 2002 to 2006 before briefly returning to IBM. He completed his career as a Senior Head Gimbal Assembly Designer at Seagate Technology in Bloomington, Minnesota, working there from 2006 until just days before his passing in 2020.

Mike was an active member at Redeemer Lutheran Church, helping in the kitchen for funerals and other gatherings, and serving the Lord with his vocal talents as a tenor in the Sounds of Praise choir. For many years he was an active bicyclist until his health issues prevented him from continuing. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, actively supporting his children as a youth baseball coach, Cub Scout Den Leader, dance and cheerleading dad, chaperone for school trips, and President of the John Marshall High School Band Boosters.

A hard worker and enthusiastic learner, Mike applied his enjoyment of problem solving and developing new skills to both his professional and personal lives. His talents were always in demand, and he enjoyed technical challenges from home improvement projects to cake decorating to home-built 3D printers.

Mike is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary; son Matt (Kate) Hanley, grandson Miles; daughter Allison Hanley (fiancé Chris Heil); his mother Shirley Hanley; mother-in-law Arlene Krueger; brothers Dan (Michele) Hanley, Jeff (Laurie) Hanley; sisters Patty (Tom) Kopp, Kate (John) Mayer, Sue (Matt) Stammeyer; sister-in-law Lisa (Ford) Erickson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father (Frank), father-in-law (Don Krueger), and brother (John Jay).

Mike showed his tenacity, strength of character, and love while battling cancer since 2017, remaining devoted to his family and witnessing his faith to the very end. Mike set a beautiful example of his faith throughout his life and knew he was going home to be with his Lord and Savior in heaven. The family would like to thank Dr. Keith Bible of Mayo Clinic Oncology, Rochester, the team at Mayo Clinic Health System Cannon Falls, the many nurses and health care givers he encountered during this journey who cared for him during his illness, as well as those at Seasons Hospice in his final hours.

Memorials are suggested to Redeemer Lutheran Church of Rochester.

Alison,

I am so sorry to hear about your father's death. He was always such a good host during our high school parties. Your mom, of course, was also so kind to make snacks for all of us. I remember your dad helping us build the catapult for physics class. However would we have done that without him?  I will keep your family in my prayers.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I wish you and your future husband all the best!

Blessings, Heidi and James Hogan

My heart aches for you. I have such fond high school memories of him as a band dad. His smile was so warm and inviting. I know he was a great influence on Matt and the wonderful guy he was growing up and now as an adult, husband, and father. Prayers and hugs from LaCrosse!!

My deepest sympathy to the family during this difficult time.  I worked with Mike for many years and really admired his positive outlook regardless of the situation.  Will miss his smile.

Mary and Family,

Our heartfelt sympathy in your loss.   May God’s peace and the many special memories you have help to comfort you at this time.  I had the pleasure of getting to know Mike and your family when I started working at IBM in ‘79 as Mike and I were both in the same department, 2F8 Instrumentation Development as it was called back then.  He taught me many things about building electronic circuits and debugging them as Mike was never too busy to stop his work to help someone out.  His smile was always there which made coming to work and being around him so much fun.   Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I am so sorry to hear this news and for your loss.

I was fortunate to cycle with Mike ( usually on Salem Road ) .

He was the stronger cyclist, but kept my pace so we could enjoy conversing.

We were so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Yet we rejoice in the fact that he is no longer in any pain and now has a perfect body. We always enjoyed any time spent with Mike, as well as all of you. He will be sorely missed, yet many fond memories will will remain with us. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Mike's fight these last few years has been nothing short of inspirational. He had one of the most optimistic and thankful attitudes I have ever seen in the face of such trial. A real testimony to his character. He will be greatly missed by many.

I'm joyful that Mike is awaiting the resurrection and his perfect body.  His attitude through many trials was truly inspiring.  I'm sadend that current circumstances did allow us to see him these last months and that we will not be able to gather to reflect on his memory in the near term but please know we are thinking of you and pray for your comfort.
