Melissa and Emily Phiefer

Melissa Ann and Emily Grace Phiefer age 35yrs and 2yrs passed away on March 3, 2016 in Rochester following a tragic fire at their home.

Melissa Ann Phiefer was born on October 14, 1980 in Rochester to Susan Smith and Scott Phiefer. Melissa attended Eyota schools before graduating from Mayo High School. She obtained her LPN degree in 2007 from RCTC. Starting as a CNA, she worked at several Rochester nursing homes, most recently Golden Living East in Rochester. She deeply loved her profession. On January 16, 2014 her daughter Emily was born in Rochester. Melissa’s life revolved around her daughter and the two were inseparable. She was an artistic, talented, and giving person. She was recently learning to sew, and was excited to begin making things for her family. Little Emily captured the heart of every person who met her. To Emily, no one was a stranger and she loved them all.

They are survived by Melissa’s twin brother Michael of Chatfield, her brother Andy Phiefer of Rochester, her sister Mallory Smith of Rochester, her parents Susan Smith of Byron, MN and Scott Phiefer of Eyota, her step-father Russell “Sam” Smith of Chatfield, MN, her grandparents Jackie Phiefer of Rochester and Dorothy (Don) Bourquin of Byron, MN.

They are preceded in death their grandfathers Robert Phiefer and Scott Suddendorf.

A Memorial Service for Melissa and Emily will be held on Friday March 11, 2016 at 2:00pm in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Pastor Beth Perez officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rochester.

Melissa and Emily will be so missed.  She was a great Nurse who cared for those she cared for.

I knew Melissa and Emily so well and we were so close despite an ocean between us. We were only discussing our future together earlier in the week. Emily was like a daughter to me and we would all have fun playing games together on camera via Facebook. To find out what happened is so tragic and my world has been turned upside down. My heart and best wishes go out to those who meant so much to her and who she held dearly in her life. Mike her twin brother and her grandmother Jackie stand out as I knew how close she was to both of them. Melissa was a beautiful, kind hearted, loving, intelligent, funny person and like Emily could make anyone smile with her company. We used to chat nearly every day and I'm going to miss them both so very much. I would like to think of them both up there with her beloved cat Emma and beloved departed grandfather Robert who she both loved so dearly too. Melissa and Emily you were my rock, my love and infiltrated my body, mind and soul. Words really can't describe how much they meant to me. You are both will forever hold a place in my heart and I don't know what I'm going to do without you. Love and big kisses to you both xxxxxxx

I was devastated to learn of the tragedy befalling Mel and Em.
Mel had friends across North America, and even other parts of the world thanks to internet connections. We all learned of Em before her first appearance and we loved her just as much. Their loss has torn a hole in our hearts, and we can't begin to imagine the pain that you, her family, are left to bear.
There is no blame... there are only tragic accidents, and we are left to learn, and move forward.... slowly perhaps, but the best that we can.
Our love follows them both, forever.
