Mary Lucille Manahan

Mary Lucille (Breckle) Manahan, 76, passed away peacefully at home on August 19th, 2012, surrounded by her family following a recent battle with cancer.

Mary was born on October 13, 1935 to Frank and Neil (Fitzpatrick) Breckle in Rochester. She attended grade school in Simpson, MN and at St. John’s in Rochester. She graduated from Lourdes High School in 1953.

She married Christopher Manahan (son of Donald and Veronica Manahan) of Chatfield, MN on November 14, 1959 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester. They built their home in rural northeast Rochester in 1961 and enjoyed living in the country with many wonderful neighbors.

Mary began working at the Mayo Clinic in the Neurology/Psychiatry section immediately after high school, where she served as a desk attendant for 12 years prior to starting a family. She returned to Mayo in 1982 where she worked in the Central Appointment desk until her retirement in 1999. She valued her work and the friends she met through the years at the Clinic.

Mary was a lifetime member of St Francis Catholic Church, where she served on the Altar Society and volunteered at school.

In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, reading, completing jigsaw puzzles, visiting garage sales, and shopping at antique stores. Her grandchildren meant the world to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris, in 2009. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Breckle, and brothers-in-law Norbert and Cyril Huneke.

She is survived by her daughters, Amy (John) Dominski of Eau Claire, WI, Sharon Manahan of Green Bay, WI, and Marlene (Jon) Podolske of Plainview, MN; grandchildren Chris and Dan Dominski of Eau Claire and Shannon Podolske of Plainview; a brother, Charles Breckle of Rochester; sisters-in-law Carol Breckle of Rochester, Rita Huneke of Bellechester, Therese Huneke of Zumbrota, and Kate (David) Jones of Rochester, and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday, August 21 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home from 4 to 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 22, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester, with Father Paul Nelson celebrating. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at Oakwood East Cemetery following the service.

The family would especially like to thank Katie Zahasky, Clinical Nurse Practitioner with Mayo Clinic, for her many years of caring for Mary. In addition, very special gratitude is extended to the staff of Mayo Hospice for their recent support.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

To the Family of Mary.

My deepest and sincere condolences go out to you for the loss of a wonderful lady who I loved and enjoyed working with back in our day when CAD was up and running at Mayo Clinic.

She will be greatly missed and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers and know that now she is with Chris and watching over all you children and grand children.

God bless you all! May she be at peace and in no more misery or pain and suffering.

To the Manahan family,

My sincere condolences on the loss of your mother, grandmother.  I worked with Mary for many years in Central Appointment desk and she was such a wonderful person.  She was helpful, kind, and a wonderful mentor to those who came into the department.

Sincerely,

Karen and Bruce Schramm

We lived one block away during grade school and were classmates in the Lourdes class of 1953.  I always enjoyed seeing Mary and am much saddened by this news.  My prayers are with the family....    Pat Conway

Chris  and now Mary gone---  but not forgotten.  It was always a treat to visit the "Manahans" in Rochester.

I'm sure Mary sometimes rolled her eyes when the Bellechester Hunekes invaded the house-- and with the help of her children ran up and down the stairs a million times !

She was always a kind and gentle person-- I don't remember her ever raising her voice to us-- and I'm sure she didn't raise her voice to her daughters ?

Sorry we could not make it back for the funeral--- just remember -- your parents were very special people.

I haven't seen Mary in many years, but she was always kind to my brothers and me (and tolerated our antics) when we were children and she visited our home with my cousin, Bev Marek.    Condolences to Mary's family---With prayers that God will provide peace and comfort for you in this time of sadness.

I am sorry for the loss of Mary. She was a great lady & will be missed. It was great working with her in CAD. We had a lot of good times together. You are in my thoughts and prayers!

Amy, John, Chris, Dan, and all of Mary's family,

You are in our thoughts and prayers--may God bless and comfort you at this time and in the days to come. We know you will cherish the memories.          --in sympathy and love, your neighbors on Cummings Avenue
