Mary Jane McGrath

Mary Jane McGrath, of Rochester, passed away peacefully, at her home, on July 22, 2021, at the age of 81.

Mary Jane was born in Rochester, MN on December 7, 1939, to Russell and Minnie Sorensen. She graduated from Rochester Senior High School in 1958.

On February 1, 1958, Mary Jane married Lester T. McGrath. They made their home in Rochester. Mary Jane worked at the Mayo Clinic where she retired after 35 years of service.

Mary Jane loved playing cards and winning. She loved to sing, visit with her neighbors, entertain, and sit on her patio watching wildlife.  Above all, she loved her family and traveling with her daugther and grandsons.

Those who are left to cherish Mary Jane’s memory are her daughter, Patricia Ann McGrath and son, Ricky Lee McGrath (both of Rochester, MN); grandsons, Sean (Cheyenne) McGrath, Shane (Kelsey) McGrath, Brent and Brandon Nohner. She is survived by her siblings, Dick (Carole) Sorensen, Betty Ellis and Jimmy (Carol) Sorensen all of Rochester. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester McGrath; son, Patrick McGrath; parents, Russell and Minnie Sorensen; three brothers, Delvin, Frederick, and Eugene; and infant sister, Delores.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 26, 2021, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Rev. Msgr. Gerald Mahon officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2021, in the River Park Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Dear Patty, we are so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She must have been so proud of you, Patrick, and Ricky - you have such a special family. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. We wish you peace.

So sorry to hear of Mary Jane’s passing. She was such a delight to work with.

Dear Patricia, Ricky and Family:

I was devastated tonight to receive a call from one of my Mayo Clinic co-workers, Sandy Twaites, with the news of Mary Jane's passing.  I was a neighbor from 2004 to 2009 when I worked at the Mayo Clinic.  I last spoke to MJ on May 24th when she called me on my birthday....something she never forgot in all the years that I knew her.  We were planning for my next visit this summer when the US/Canadian border opened and as always, MJ was preparing for me to stay with her.  She was a generous and kind person, with always a smile to share.  I will miss her dearly.  I regret that I will be unable to attend the services, but you are in my thoughts and prayers.  Heather

I want to send the most sincere condolences to the family of Mary Jane.

I worked with Mary Jane for many years, and she was one of the most positive and pleasant persons to work with. I also enjoyed her in the Mayo Employees Business Office Coffee Group for several years.

Mary Jane had many friends, and family members who will miss her pleasantness.

I regret that I will miss the funeral services on July 25th & 26th.

My heart is heavy to hear of you lossing Mary Jane. I will remember playing cards with her, you are so right that she loved winning. I so enjoyed being include in some of the lunches she hosted. The best time was at Patricia's house for a Halloween party. She will be missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

A friend, Cinda.

I am so saddened to hear of Mary Janes passing!  Mary Jane was my 2nd cousin.  Her mom, Minnie, and my grandma, Nina, were sisters.  I have fond memories of Mary Jane's smile, kindness, thoughtfulness and humor.  Although our families didn't see each other as much as we did when we were younger, I though of her often.  My thoughts and prayers go out to her children, grandchildren and extended family.

I’m so sorry for your families loss!  Mary Jane will definitely be remembered.  Her contagious laugh, her bright smile that lit up the room and her kindness to everyone!  I loved her like my own mother.  Forever in my prayers.

Love, Mary
