Mary (Kohner) Galuska, 89, passed away on August 22, 2022 peacefully, at her home.
She was born in Winona, MN on September 21, 1932 to Edward and Marie (Lucas) Kohner. Mary attended St. Thomas grade school and Cathedra High School in Winona, graduating in 1950.
In 1955, she married Donald Galuska from Arcadia, WI. In 1957, they moved to Rochester, where they purchased the overhead door franchise and successfully operated “Rochester Overhead Door Company” for over 40 years. In her later years, Mary enjoyed making beautiful crafts and dolls. She was a fanatic about her weekly ritual of garage saling! After retiring, Mary and Don enjoyed being snowbirds in Florida, meeting many great friends they enjoyed for many years. They eventually graduated to guided bus tours. It truly was a wonderful time in their lives.
Mary and Don were married for 64 years. They had 3 children together, Robert and special friend, Julie Johnsen, Terry (Karen), and Paul (Sandi), all of Rochester; 4 grandchildren, Nick (Liz), Casey, Ashley (Sini), and Cortiney; 2 step-grandchildren, Garrett and Ella; 3 great-grandchildren, Joey, Lincoln, and Allison; brother, Jeffrey (Elaine) Kohner; sister, Carol (Fred) Buse; and brother-in-law, George (Barb).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, who passed away on February 2, 2020; her parents, Edward and Marie; brother, Ed Kohner; sister-in-law, Jane Kohner; and niece, Lynn Kohner.
The family wishes to thank Seasons Hospice for all their loving care and kindness extended to Mary these past weeks.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A private burial will be held in Oakwood East Cemetery.
Condolences
The family of Mary Galuska has received the following condolences.
I remember very well growing up with the Kohners. They were our wonderful neighbors in Winona during my growing up years. I recall Mary as being such a helpful friendly young woman. My sympathies to the extended family!
My sympathies to Bobby, Terry and Pauly,
Your mom was the angel of our neighborhood and a joy to the world. Mary is/was a beautiful soul that will be in all of our hearts. I have so many stories to treasure, as I had the fortunate childhood that included Mary, her family and the original neighborhood friends. She made the world a better place. She sewed doll clothes for my doll, included me for lunch on Holy days and always made time for the neighborhood kids. She made the most wonderful anise candy each summer!
In Peace and Grace, Lindy Holtegaard
I remember Mary well from the years we attended Pax Christi. Loved talking about garage sales with her. She was such a kind soul. My prayers to Terry and Karen and the whole family.
I will miss you tremendously. You were always a ray of sunshine. I will miss our talks of classic movies, our enjoying Red Lobster and Chinese, but mostly your loving and sharing life. You are in peace now, no more worries. Condolences to your family.
