Mary Ellen Ryan, 74, of Rochester died Wednesday June 1, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
She was born Mary Ellen Schneider on June 16, 1936 in Rochester, the Daughter of Laurence Schneider and May Moher. She married George Ryan in 1955.
Mary is survived by her sisters Linda Schaber, Margaret Flanigan and Joanne Kleinman. She is survived by her sons Terry, Bruce, and Jeff, and her daughter Barb Rogers from Louisville, Ky, 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by four sisters (Angie Rowekamp, Elizabeth Wakefield, Virginia Fitzgerald, and Shirley Fischer) and one brother (Larry Schneider), and her son, Gary.
Mary loved to be independent, and to care for others. She was a friend to many through her 40 year tenure at Mayo Clinic, starting at Methodist Hospital, most notably in Orthopedics on 10-3. After retiring from Mayo Clinic, she continued establishing friendships at Northgate as a Day Care provider.
Mary loved Gardening and the Vikings, especially when they won. She loved having family around.
Because of her love of children, memorials are suggested to Ronald McDonald House, 850 2nd St. SW, Rochester, MN 55902 – (507) 282-3955.

To all of Mary's family, Please accept my sincere sympathy, Mary was the greatest. Mary and I worked together on 2nd floor at "old" Methodist Hospital for several years and later in the "new" hospital. She was a delight to work with and the patients loved her. She had the best "bread and butter" pickle recipe which she shared and I used for many years. She was a kind and loving person and will be missed. Ginny Gosselin
My Sympathy to The Ryan Family at this time of loss. I worked near Mary, next door on 10-4 when she worked on 10-3, and we remained friends during her time on 6-4. We always found some way to laugh each day-such a dlightful lady. I fondly remember a party she had at her place with some us girls, while floating around on a pantoon boat laughing, giggling, and just hanging out. She was a great friend. She was proud of her family. With regards, Linda Zea
To Mary's Family, I will surely miss seeing her when I come to Rochester as Sue and I always had dinner with her. My deepest sympathy to you all. Helen Mcintire

Bruce, sorry for your loss. I don't know if Mary ever mentioned to you that I did service work at her townhome. 1 time saw Jeff Hemker there visiting. Gods speed to you and you family during this time of mourning. Steve
My sympathies to you all. I will miss Mary very much. We had so much fun when we worked together and when we went to the Viking's games. I'll miss her just being up the hill from me and will miss her flower gardens.

We were saddened to learn of Mary's passing. Our deepest condolences to Mary's family. Mary and I worked together many years on Second Floor in the Colonial Building. We also became friends and spent time together away from work with our young children. Mary was always so jolly and very good-hearted. We had purchased our first home and Mary offered to sew draperies for every room. She did and when I offered to pay her she wouldn't accept one dime. I have never forgotten that. She helped me out times too numerous to mention. I eventually took a different position so we didn't have a chance to chat as much until I returned to Methodist in the 90's. Mary hadn't changed a bit. She was still that wonderful person inside and out. She definitely was an angel.
