Mary A. Schenewerk

Mary Ann Schenewerk, retired Registered Nurse, age 100, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2011 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

“Dancing Mary”, as she was well known to many in the area, was born March 24, 1911 in Lincoln, Wisconsin to Louis J. and Anna M. (Slaby) Kulig.  She grew up in Independence, Wisconsin, graduated from Independence High School, and from St. Francis School of Nursing, La Crosse, Wisconsin.  She married William Schenewerk and lived for a time in Washington State; they later divorced.  Mary was a private duty nurse with St. Marys Hospital in Rochester from 1933-1938 and then from 1946 until she retired in 1981.  Her retirement activities included hobbies of dancing and playing cards.  She belonged to Polka Club of America, and the US Amateur Ballroom Dancers’ Association.

During her career at St. Marys Hospital, Mary cared for patients from across the US and Canada and around the world, many of whom stayed in contact with her long after she completed her care for them.

Surviving are daughters Sandra (Lawrence) Tholen, Wichita, KS, and Mary Lou (Michael) McMorrow, Arlington, VA; grandchildren Lynne Tholen, Karen (Tim) Burnett, Lisa Tholen, Daniel Tholen, Mary Alice (Charles) Ball, Megan (Barry) Reicherter, Maureen (John) Bett, Myles McMorrow, 13 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving is a brother Alphonse (Ginny) Kulig, and a sister-in-law Delores (Mrs. Bernard) Kulig.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Aloysius Kulig, Bernard Kulig, sisters Sister Mary Euphrosine Kulig, Theresa Kulig Bautch, foster brother Edward Kulig, and granddaughter Laurie Tholen Takes.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church with Rev. John Lasuba officiating.  Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Independence, Wisconsin.

Friends may call from 5:00-7:00PM in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home  on Monday, July 25 and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
