Lyle Richard Rostad
Lyle Richard Rostad, 89, of Rochester, Minnesota passed away on March 21, 2018 of natural causes at St. Marys Hospital.
Lyle was born in 1929 born on Skifton farm in Black Hammer Township, Houston County. On March 16, 1962, he married Karen Ann Wheeler in Rochester, Minnesota at Zumbro Lutheran Church.
He was pulled out of school after the eighth grade to work on the farm. He was drafted into the Army and given an honorable discharge in September 1951. He moved to Rochester in 1954 and started work at a filling station. In 1957, he started work at Dayton’s department store and retired in 1991 after 34 years.
As a youth, Lyle played for the Black Hammer baseball team. As a young man, he liked to play on the Rochester bowling leagues. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 249. For 35 years, he was in charge of the clothing drive for Lutheran world relief at Zumbro Lutheran Church and enjoyed many decades of ushering and greeting and assisting with communion. He was fascinated with Cardinals and enjoyed collecting agates and coins. He played the accordion and the organ. Nothing made Lyle prouder than his son, Leslie, graduating from high school, entering the Army and becoming an officer, all the way to becoming a correctional officer at the Federal Medical Center here in Rochester. He taught his daughter, Jody, at a young age how to play “You Are My Sunshine” on the organ and it was still Lyle and Jody’s song and forever will be. After Lyle’s retirement, his daughter had a horrible car accident in 1995. He devoted his time to caring for her until he could no more. Lyle’s biggest accomplishment was being the greatest father.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Rostad; children, Les Richard (April) Rostad of Rochester, MN, and Jody Marie Rostad Gladson; three grandchildren, Sonja Ann Rostad of Minneapolis, MN, Bjorn Michael Rostad of Rochester, and Freya Christine Rostad of Rochester; sisters, Elmira Steigerwald of Austin, MN, Arlene Bain of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Judy Baumach of Wautoma, WI.
Lyle is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one son.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28th at Zumbro Lutheran Church with Pastor Lisa Kipp. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Zumbro Lutheran Church.
Condolences
The family of Lyle Richard Rostad has received the following condolences.
Lyle was such a kind and giving person. He was devoted to his family and church. Lyle was friendly and caring to everyone. He made the world a better place. Well done, good and faithful servant. We will miss him, too.
May God grant you peace and comfort you with His love in your loss.
Lyle was a hard working, kind and thoughtful man. I knew him at Zumbro. Many years ago I was the church secretary. Lyle along with several others went through boxes and boxes of papers gathered together at the time of the flood in the late ‘70,s. They worked to save as many important photos and documents as possible forming the Archive Commirtee. It was my privilege to work with them and to know Lyle.
A check is being given to Zumbro Lutheran in memory of Lyle; he served and loved all people at Zumbro many years.
Blessings in Christ, Sharryn & Tim Melin
Dear Karen and family,
It was my privilege to have known and served the Rostads for 12 years as your pastor. If there was one thing we could depend on, it was that Lyle would be present for worship and have the usher stand ready to go. He loved his God and his church. He loved all of you deeply and was very proud of you. I enjoyed my visits with Jody and, for a few years, David, and Lyle would often join us for Holy Communion and prayer. His devotion and reverence inspired me. As you say your farewells, be assured that this good man’s love for you will continue, even as he rests with our Lord. May love and peace surround you. Blessings and thanksgiving—Pastor Carol
