Lloyd Bertel Carlson

Lloyd Bertel Carlson, of Byron, passed away at St. Marys Hospital on Saturday, June 30, 2018.

Lloyd was born May 16, 1942 to Carl and Stella (Lee) Carlson in Byron. He attended Byron High School and graduated in 1960. He joined the US Navy and proudly served his country during the Vietnam era from 1964-1966; spending his service on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany in Aviation Maintenance Administration stationed just off Vietnam.

On August 5, 1967, he married Carol J. Exe. His career began as a truck driver for Rochester Sand and Gravel. He later joined the Ironworker Local Union, worked for A.E. Benike Construction Company and retired July 2004 from Schwab Construction in Winona after 21 years as a Construction Superintendent.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Carol J. Carlson; son, Brett (Gina) Carlson; and daughter, Cassandra Carlson; brothers, Curtis (Bonnie) Carlson and Francis (Marylin) Carlson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lavonne Siewert, and brother, Gerald Carlson.

Lloyd’s hobbies were working on furniture projects for their home and fabricating mechanical tools for his beloved John Deere tractor. He had an incredibly creative mind and could see things and how to make them work. He loved to tinker in his workshop with his wife and children. We all benefitted from his creative mind. He had a great sense of humor and was forever teasing his family. He also enjoyed spending time with his extended family for the annual Lutefisk dinner and family picnic. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 7 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Rev. Lester Horntvedt officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

What a sweet funny kind Uncle I had. I am heartbroken for Aunt Carol, Brett and Cassy. I know the loss is great because Uncle Lloyd was a wonderful Husband and Dad too! This is so painful, I am praying God will be in the middle of this trajedy and pour out His peace and hope. I don't get to come cry with all my family as we say goodbye but I want you all to know I love you!
