Leona Rose Fisher Smith

A funeral Mass for Leona “Lee” Smith will be at 11:00AM, Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester with the Rev. Charlie Collins and Rev. Paul Nelson co-officiating.  Visitation will be 5:00pm – 8:00pm Monday, March 25, 2013 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Tuesday.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Leona Rose Fisher Smith passed away March 22, 2013, one day shy of her 91st birthday at the Homestead in Rochester.

She was born in Spillville, Iowa and worked in Mason City, Iowa as a medical secretary.  On June 12, 1948, she married Richard J. Smith and they celebrated 59 years of marriage together.  Dick passed away January 3, 2008.

Lee was a master organizer and was known for her extensive “lists”.  This talent led her to many leadership positions at which she excelled, including President of Assisi Heights Volunteers, Director of St. Marys Hospital Auxiliary, President of St. Pius X Parish Council and Super-Regional Couple of Teams of Our lady, which allowed Dick and Lee to travel to Europe 29 times.

Dick and Lee were very active at St. Pius X Church where they were Eucharistic Ministers.  Their spirituality dominated their lives and influenced many others.

Lee had a zest for life, a great sense of humor and was willing to try anything, including deep sea fishing and riding camels in Egypt.  She loved country western and polka music and danced every chance she had. She enjoyed speaking Czech with her sisters and embraced her Czech heritage.

Lee was a wonderful mother to her seven children and enjoyed making their favorite meals when they visited and at Christmas would make everyone’s favorite cookies per their extensive requests.

Lee is survived by her seven children; Rick (Kathy), Dr. Mark (Annette), Dr. Tom (Karen), Mary,  Martha (David) Shadid, John (Lisa) and Dr. Pete (Brittney); 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her husband Dick.

Memorials are suggested to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Lourdes High School and the Mayo Hospice Program.

On-line condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com.

Condolences

The family of Leona Rose Fisher Smith has received the following condolences.

Dear Smith Family,

Mike Rowekamp called to let me know of Lee's passing and I wanted to send our condolences on the passing of a wonderful mother, friend, neighbor and fellow parishoner. I can still hear Lee's joyful voice calling out a hello as I would drive, bike or walk near the Smith home in "the hood", as Mary would call it. Jenny had a special experience with Lee in her later years at Homestead, enjoying lunch with her almost every day. Please know all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Jeff and Jenny

Dear Mary, Tom and family,

I am sorry i missed Lee's funeral, heard the news late.  I want to say that I remember Lee always being in a joyous mood-so happy when any kids showed up, loved to chat with us. The last time I visited you Mary at your house when your Dad was sick, Lee was a little fuzzy on who I was, but when I said I married Mike Zeman she broke into a big smile and said "Mikey", little Mikey Zeman!! Gosh- that made Mikes day.

This great generation is passing on. I feel that each parent (of my childhood friends) has influenced us and is part of who we are today. God Bless them all!

Much love, Elissa and Mikey

To all the family of Dick and Lee Smith,

Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy and prayers that God will welcome Lee home to Him and grant all her family comfort and peace. We surely miss them. Our sorrow is assuaged in knowing that one day, hopefully, we will all be together again. They were our models.

Our heartfelt condolences to the family of Lee Smith.  She was a good friend and a wonderful promoter of 'The Good News' of Christ.  We remember all that she did for Teams of Our Lady.  We are happy for her in that she is back with Dick and Our Lord.

Dear Tom and all of the Smith family, My prayers and condolences.  I remember your Mom as filled with joy in life, ready with a welcoming smile, and always ready to open her home to rowdy high school visitors.  There was a warmth and sense of humor about her that was infectious.  I am sure you will be celebrating her life with lots of great stories.

peace, Peter Gathje

Rick,

My deepest sympathies to you and your family.  It sounds like your mother was a very special lady.

we  were   so   sorry  to  hear   that   LEE  PASSED AWAY   SHE   WAS   A    WONDERFUL  AND   ENERGTIC  PERSON.SHE  WILL  BE   MISSED    WITH   DEEPEST  SYMPATHHY DAVID   W  MACKEN   AND

Lee has earned her richly deserved heavenly reward. We are among those finding it difficult to visit her at Homestead. We will always remember the vitality and friendship we shared for so many years and look forward to greeting family and other friends at her funeral. Our love and prayers are with you.

Although you do not know me, I had the pleasure of meeting your Mom and Dad a number of times when they came to the Washington, DC area for TEAMS of Our Lady. They were both delightful and we had many laughs (and serious conversations) about the church. Shall offer Mass this week for your family - no need to pray for Lee. She and Dick are happy together in the Communion of Saints. Affectionately, Fr. Maury O'Connell

A wonderful woman in so many ways.  Always great to be with her - and Dick.  Teams of Our Lady USA owes much to them.  Lee will be in my thoughts and prayers - as will the whole family in its loss and sorrow.

What a great lady she was. We were only familiar with Lee and Dick through Teams of Our Lady. They were our national leaders during our tenure as sector couple for Maryland. They were an example of the grandeur of marriage! That grandeur was their greatest gift to all of us, a vision of the beauty of marriage when we take time to kindle it, as they did, with frequent little acts of virtue.
We were privileged to make a special trip to celebrate their 50th and may have met some of you then. May Lee and Dick rest in peace and enjoy the eternal reward they justly deserve.

I'am sorry I will not be able to attend Lee's Funeral. Dick and Lee were very good friends. Sue and I had our feet under their dining room table or picnic table outside a number of times. Their children and our children were class mates at Lourdes, we shared many activities together. I had many dances with Lee. Whenever their was music, esp. a polka or waltz she put up with my trying to keep up with her. We worked together in Serra, Lourdes Foundation, High School Dances, Guest House and many graduation celebrations plus many fund raisers. Besides all of the things we did together, I really loved her Kolachi rolls.

Their family is an example and a demonstration of a life we all hoped to duplicate. God Blessed Dick and Lee and now they are back together.

To my Smith Cousins,

I was sad to hear of my Aunt Leona's passing. Even though it was expected, it is never

easy to lose a parent. I have many good memories of her, she was a great lady. May she

rest in peace.

Love, Sue Smith Russett
