LaVon B. Thacher

LaVon Bernadine Thacher, 93, of Rochester, MN died Friday evening April 1, 2011 at the Samaritan Bethany on Eighth Street in Rochester.  She was born on May 28, 1917 to Herman and Amanda (Walter) Miller.

LaVon Graduated from Cresco, Iowa High School in 1934 and attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year.  She was a rural school teacher in Howard County, Iowa from 1936 to 1939.  LaVon married Daniel Thacher of Preston, MN on December 31, 1940.  They had one daughter, Tania, and later divorced.

LaVon joined the Mayo Clinic in 1960 and worked her entire career as a receptionist.  First, at Saint Marys Physical Medicine and in 1965 switched to Ophthalmology (W7).  She retired in 1982.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Vernon and Milton Miller and sisters; Vera Moon and Maxine Halverson.  She is survived by her daughter; Tania (Jim) Fleming, four grandsons; Jesse (Nicole) Fleming, Jeremy (Nicky) Fleming, Josh and Jake Fleming and also three great-grandchildren; Tessa, Jaylen and Braelyn Fleming.

LaVon loved nothing more than to be outside socializing and gardening.  She also loved her dogs Benji and Bahley, Christmas time, entertaining her friends, her daughter Tania and family. LaVon will always be remembered for her beautiful infectious smile that was with her her until the end, along with her caring personality and love of children.  She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A funeral service is planned for Friday, April 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Homestead United Methodist Church in Rochester with Jane Day officiating. Burial will be at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Cresco, Iowa.  Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the River Park Chapel Macken Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Friday.
