Laura Helen Ricker, age 82 of Rochester passed away on Monday, August 13, 2012 at Golden Living Center East after an evening meal with her friends. She was born on October 22, 1929 in Ward Springs, Minnesota and ultimately graduated from the Rochester School of Vocational Nursing in 1948. She worked with vascular, colon, and orthopedic patients, and in 1981 joined the staff of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit until retirement.
Throughout her 35 years working at St. Mary’s Hospital, she was privileged to witness construction of the Domitilla, Alfred and Mary Brigh buildings. Laura’s philosophy was to treat each patient individually as if she was treating Jesus himself.
When not at work, Laura enjoyed reading, walking, listening to classical music, and partying with friends and relatives. She could tell a lot of great stories and jokes, and had a great sense of humor. Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Casper and Mathilda Ricker, brothers Bernard, Richard, Roman, Alfred, Hubert and Sylvester, sisters Jenny, Rose, Olivia, Florence, Alice, Lorena, Regina and Rita. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorials are preferred to the Sisters of Saint Frances at Assisi Heights. Macken Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, and online condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com.

Dear Diane, Molly, Judy and akk of Laura's family,
I worked in Rehab Nursing 1980 to 1992....with Laura Ricker often, when "on night duty". She assured that all her co-workers "gave our best care" to our patients as we did when "on the day shift". She lightened the darkness of the night with stories, humor and concern for her co-workers.
Socially, we celebrated birthdays, and other occasions, with tasty food, served with elegance @ her home or out. Laura made efforts to bond with friends in a lasting and meaningful way! Laura requested and accepted my visits through her retirement and life in the hospital and Nursing Home.
Laura, you have earned your Heavenly peace and joys!! I will always remember you!

I worked with Laura in the early 70's--And like so many other new nursing graduates, Laura was one of the nurses who showed me the ropes and trained me when I came to work on first east--rehab then. And if Laura showed you how to do it you knew it was pretty darn close to perfection! She took great pride in the quality of her work and expected the same of others. Often, people would ask her why she hadn't gone on to school to become a registered nurse, and ultimately a head nurse. Laura truly preferred, as she said, 'being in the trenches'; working directly, hands on, with the patients. And I know she felt, and she did, make a difference to many patients, especially on rehab.
Outside of work, I had many an adventure with Laura. Her humor, positive outlook on life, and many kindnesses to others will be missed.

I worked for nearly 10 years with Laura and looked forward to having lunch a time or two each year with her. She was one good nurse ! Also enjoyed her lemon bread! May you be comforted by good memories, friends and family during this time of loss
