Kristen Tyler Zempel (Peterson), age 72, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Methodist Campus, surrounded by love and faith.

Kristen was born in Dubuque, Iowa, where her life of compassion and service began. She met the love of her life, Mark Zempel, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and together they began their journey as a family. The couple moved to Monroe, Washington, where they started raising their children, later relocating to Neenah, Wisconsin, and eventually retiring in Menomonie, Wisconsin, a place they proudly called home. Throughout every season of her life, Kristen remained devoted to her family, her faith, and caring for others.

A dedicated registered nurse, Kristen spent her career serving with kindness, empathy, and grace, leaving a lasting impression on the many lives she touched. Known affectionately as “Chatty Kathy,” she had a joyful spirit, a warm heart, and an infectious love for conversation, laughter, and connection.

Kristen cherished time spent with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable pride and happiness. She loved gardening, music, and meaningful moments shared with those she loved. She also treasured spending time in Florida with her family, where sunshine, togetherness, and relaxation brought her great joy.

Kristen’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She volunteered faithfully through her church and the local humane society, always guided by her deep belief in God and her servant’s heart. Her legacy of love, generosity, and devotion will continue to live on in all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving husband, Mark Zempel; her son, David Zempel, and daughter-in-law Rachel Zempel, along with their daughter Kennedy Zempel; and her daughter, Katheryne Drake (Zempel), and son-in-law Adam Drake, with their son Carter Drake. She was preceded in death by her parents, Doris Peterson and Frederick Peterson.

A celebration of Kristen’s life will be held on Saturday, February 28th, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 1100 9th Street East, Menomonie, WI 54751. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. The memorial service is at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow all at the same location.
