Kenneth R. Freeman

The Funeral Mass for Kenneth R. Freeman will be at 11:00AM on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home officiated by the Rev. Harry Jewison.  Burial will take place at a later date in St. Pauls Cemetery in Zumbrota.

Kenneth Rodney Freeman died suddenly of a stroke at St. Mary’s Hospital on March 11, 2012 at age 84. Ken was born on May 30, 1927 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin to Almeron and Gertrude Freeman. He was a resident of Rochester, Minnesota since his childhood. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served our country during World War II. After the war, he began his 37 year career with the Kruse Lumber Company as a carpenter and construction superintendent. Numerous homes around the city of Rochester still attest to the mastery of his craft.

On September 22, 1949, he married Ruth Margaret Schafer. For the next 62 years, he remained a loving, devoted husband and father to four children. He greatly enjoyed pheasant hunting and weekend golf outings with his family. He and Ruth loved playing bridge in multiple bridge clubs. Lawn and garden work was always a pleasure for him. He was particularly fond of his pet cats and bird watching the year around.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Lenore. He is survived by his wife, Ruth and his brother Arden in addition to four children William, Madeleine (Lafoille), Daniel, and Mary (Smith).

Friends may call from 5:00PM – 8:00PM, Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at the River Park Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to the Safe Haven Pet Rescue, Camp Companion, or Paws and Claws animal shelters.

On-line condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com.

We were so sorry to read  of Ken's death.  Our sympathy and prayers are with you.  Maybe you remember me, Ruth,  in a long, long, long ago bridge club in the neighborhood.  We lived across the "gulley" from you.

Dear Aunt Ruth, Bill, Madeline, Dan and Mary,   I am so saddened to hear of Uncle Ken's passing.  He was a gentle, kind uncle and I have many memories of Thanksgivings that we all spent together.  You are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.  With love, Cathy

Ken, we enjoyed your humorous personality during our "Newcomer's" contract bridge group evenings - for many years, and most recently just a few weeks ago.  We always enjoyed visiting you and Ruth in the home you were proud to have built - and welcoming you to ours - where you two consistently whomped us @ bridge!  Fond memories, best wishes.

Dear Ruth,

I was shocked to hear of Ken's death.  He's been a friend for years, and all of us in Chat 'n' Chew will miss him dearly.  I know this will be a difficult time for you.  Nowadays, few of us get to be with a partner as long as you and Ken.  I hope the memory of all those years will be a comfort.  At the same time, after so many years, I'm sure you depended on Ken for many things.  You have my deepest sympathy.

Bill Rood

Maddy, Bill, Dan, Mary Jean and Aunt Ruth,

My thoughts and prayers go to you.  Many Thanksgivings of memories.  My fondest memory of your dad was at your home one snowy Thanksgiving eve.  We were getting packed up into the car and your dad started a snowball fight with my dad.   Lighthearted.  Two brothers being kids again.  It is one of those crystal clear memory photos we take and keep forever.  Wishes to all of you for remembrance of those great mind photos.  Sorry I cannot be there to give you strong hugs.

Love, hugs across the miles, and more love,     Sandy

Our sympathies and prayers go out to you Ruth and Bill and Dan and Madeline and Mary. We were truly shocked when Bill called to inform us of Kens death. (Thank you for the prompt call) Even though we didn't get to Oak Hills Drive this past summer we enjoyed the phone calls updating us about your family and lives. We especially miss the "wild" card games we played and the visits with you. Know that although your loss of husband and father is great, time will heal your grief and Ken will want you remember the good times you all has as a family. As his bother and sister-in-law we will miss him also.                                                                   We plan to see you Wednesday at Mackens. We will be flying in from Arizona to Minneapolis and driving to Rochester and get there by 10 or so.                                                                                                                Until then God Bless and Keep You.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          With Love, Arden and Carol

Dear Ruth and family,

We are saddened to hear of Ken's death.  It doesn't seem possible that he could be gone after having such a nice time with the two of you on Friday night and enjoying Ken's dry sense of humor.  We are glad that the last time we saw him was a nice visit and bridge game.

We plan to come to the funeral on Wednesday.
