Kathryn “Katie” Godsill

Katie Godsill, loving and generous wife, mother, and friend, passed on to be with the Lord on February 13, 2025.

Kathryn Ann Metz was born April 14, 1938 in Cheyenne, WY to Rose and William Metz.

Katie began her professional career by earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics from St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, Kansas. A dietetic internship at St. Marys Hospital brought her to Rochester in 1960. Upon completion of this, she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver from 1963 – 69, and then returned to Minnesota to work at Mayo Clinic as a Clinical Dietitian. In 1972, she became the Consulting Dietitian at Samaritan Bethany Nursing Homes, and served in this position for 36 years. Katie was also an instructor at the Rochester Area Vo-Tech Institute, teaching a Nutrition & Food Safety course for school lunch workers from 1985-87.

On November 28, 1969, she married Thomas Godsill in Denver.

Katie is survived by her husband Tom; children Linda of Rochester, Colleen (Chris) Steichen of Johnston, IA, Timothy (fiancé Anna Flewellen) of Inver Grove Heights, and Patrick of Fort Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren Kate, Alex and Jacob Steichen; and sister Nanette (Mike) Brown of Cheyenne, WY. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Marion Black. Baking and sewing were some of Katie’s creative passions. True to her heritage, a specialty was Scottish Shortbread, created from a traditional family recipe. After her retirement, she was the “basket lady”, creating adorable little, holiday-themed baskets from plastic canvas and colorful yarn and ribbon. They were filled with candy and donated to St. Pius Church and local nursing homes, including Samaritan Bethany.

Katie and her family would like to offer their deepest thanks to Dr. Denise Dupras and her nurse, Terry, for their care and empathy. We also express heartfelt gratitude to Mayo Clinic’s Home Bound Services and Hospice.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1315 12th Avenue NW, Rochester, MN. Internment at Calvary Cemetery will follow the Mass.

In Katie’s honor, memorials are suggested to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul via St. Pius X Catholic Church to assist those in need and the homeless.https://www.wesharegiving.org/app/giving/WeShare-20001186

Condolences

The family of Kathryn “Katie” Godsill has received the following condolences.

I spent countless days and nights and sleepovers at the Godsill house growing up, and Mrs. Godsill was always the most amazing person. She was always so kind and thoughtful, and she always went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and seen and cared for. She genuinely felt like a second Mom to me from about 3rd grade through high school. Her home always felt like the most amazing place to be, and that's because she was so fantastic.

Best, Michael Johnson

To the Godsill family,

She was a great neighbor and I got to know her better at church. Prayers to all of you during this difficult time. Your mom and mine had some great memories in the neighborhood.

Katie (Ulwelling) Scott

I remember those cookies, sewn baskets, and her smile.  Always warm and gracious, Katie will be forever in mine and my brothers Daniels hearts.  Lucky to have met her and her loving family.  We will think of her often and know she is looking upon us and wishing us well. Rest in peace.

I was a young dietitian doing consulting work when I found the Consulting Dietitan group and Katie. She was a mentor and friend and I always enjoyed when we met at her home and had delicious potlucks. I have a few of her delicious recipes. I reconnected with her just a few years ago and was a joy to see her again and catch up.
with sincere sympathy, Kathy
