Kathleen “Kay” Ann Amelse

The funeral for Kathleen (Kay) Amelse will be at 10:30 am Thursday April 21, 2016 at Madonna Towers in Rochester, with Rev. Andrew Deitz officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, MN. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at Madonna Towers on Thursday.

Mrs. Kathleen (Kay) Amelse, 78, of Rochester, Minn., died Sunday, April 17, at Seasons Hospice.

Kay was born on July 7, 1937, in St. Paul, Minn., to Walter and Virginia Adamson.  Kay was raised in St. Paul along with her three siblings.  She attended St. Joseph’s High School, and was a dental assistant after graduating.  Kay married John Amelse on December 28, 1957. She was a loving mother and wife who, along with John, raised eight children. She later continued her education at The College of Saint Thomas, often bringing her youngest daughter, Katie, with her to class.  She also taught art and water exercise classes in Des Moines as part of the Compass Club.

She enjoyed her large family, especially her 29 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Kay enjoyed art, gourmet cooking, golf, decorating and playing cards. She gave generously of her time to charities. She was a member of The Knights of Holy Sepulchre and the Serra Club as well as teaching art to Alzheimer’s patients at the Bishop Drumm home in Des Moines. She and John also gave time to various fundraisers at Dowling High School (West Des Moines, Iowa) and the parishes they belonged to over the years.  Most importantly, Kay was a woman of strong faith who never wavered in her beliefs. She passed the same faith to her entire family.

Survivors include her children, Mary Corrigan (Pat), Janice Hopfensperger (Dane), Michelle Deitz (Dave), Jeanine Wallner (Jim), Melissa Bares (Mike), John W. Amelse (Lauri), Megan Scheckel (Dan), son-in-law Russ Burg (Tasha); her sister Elaine Gran (Bob), her brother Pat Adamson (Kathy), her sister-in-law Donna Adamson; 29 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Amelse, her daughter, Katie Burg, her parents Walter and Virginia Adamson, and her brother Mike Adamson.

Memorials are preferred to….Madonna Towers in honor of all they have done for our parents.

Mary,

Our sympathy on the loss of your dear mother.  We just finished reading her obituary and what a beautiful life she has lived and shared with so many children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren.  May God comfort you in your loss.

Suzie & Mike Lawler

We are very sorry for your loss.  You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thinking of you today, John Lauri, Jase and Avey and the entire Amelse family as you lay your mom (grandma) to rest.  It is so hard to lose a parent but your mother and father left the gift of strong character and a loving family for their children and grandchildren that will continue for generations.  You are in our hearts on this sad day.
"Aunt Carolyn and Uncle Louis"

Dan, Meg and kids and all of Meg's siblings and their families,

So sorry to hear about the passing of your mother/grandmother. Sending our condolences to you and the entire Amelse family during this very difficult time. You will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Sending all of our love,

Karen, Scott, Lauren, Liam and Carter Easton

Prayers and compassion to the entire Amelse family as they mourn the loss of Mom and Grandma!  John and Lauri and children are a vital, living, and loving example of a wonderful Christian heritage which is priceless.  They are able to testify to generations beyond.  May God comfort each of you in the special way needed!  "Aunt Judy" Vos.

She was an inspiration on raising a wonderful family. I remember her swimming in her pool, Katie waiting with my kids to catch the bus and Megan knocking on my door (hair in braids) and offering to babysit. So sorry to hear of your loss. Jackie Clive, Iowa

So sorry to hear the news. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this sad time.

Jeanine and family,

Sending our thoughts and prayers on the passing of your mother.

Love you, Steve & Shelly Boles and family

It was with sadness that we received the news of Kay's death, although the good news is that she and John are together once again. Judy and I spent much of the evening remembering the time we spent with Kay and John from Lakewood, OH, to Columbia Heights, Des Moines, Las Vegas, and our last meeting in Hayward, WI. Our condolences and prayers go to your family. Thank you for calling.

Blessings on Kay as she finishes her journey home.

And my sympathy to her family.
