Ms. Riess was born April 5th, 1945. She was the eldest of six children born to Lawrence and Vera Lyons. Ms. Riess graduated from Plainview High School, MN in 1963. Following graduation, she moved to Rochester where she was employed by First Federal Bank. On October 1st, 1966, she married Darrell E. Riess at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, MN. In 1971 they started their family by adopting their son, Chad and daughter, Starr through Catholic Charities, which led them to becoming infant foster parents for the charity. Following her years of being a full time mother and homemaker she re-entered the work force as an Executive Administrative Assistant for the Rochester Area Foundation. She furthered her education earning an Associate in Arts Degree from Rochester Community College.

Karen will be missed by her two children, son, Chad (Dawn) D. Riess of Loveland, CO, and daughter, Starr (Bonn) E. Heller of Rochester, MN. Other survivors include grandchildren, Taylor (Jordan Hanson) M. Riess, Byron, MN, Jacob D. Riess, Springfield, MO, Grant (fiancée Mikayla Eischen) M. Heller, Rochester, MN, Grace E. Heller, Rochester, MN, Dustin Meyer, Rochester, MN, Brooke (Nick) Sikkink, Rochester, MN, Drew (fiancée Cora Sandow) Meyer, Twin Cities; brothers, Bob (Jean) Lyons, Plainview, MN, Ken Lyons, Lake City, MN, Don (girlfriend Shelly Carlson) Lyons, Faribault, MN; sisters, Jan (Lyle) Peters, Lake City, MN, and Barb Dickerman, Lino Lake, MN.

Karen enjoyed participating in many organizations including serving as Coordinator/Fundraiser for the Star of the North Games, President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 92, treasurer for St. Francis Catholic Church, volunteer for Zumbro Valley Mental Health Services, and President of Century Hills Court Townhome Association. Along with her devout faith in the Lord, Karen found joy in being a grandmother, gardening, bee charming and knitting. Condolences

The family of Karen Anne Riess has received the following condolences.

Chad and Starr,

Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of your mother. I remember both of you as I would come to your home frequently bringing Catholic Charities infants for your folks to care for.Your mother was a loving and accepting person.I enjoyed all of my contacts with your parents. They had a sincere desire to give back because they felt so fortunate to have become your parents through adoption.I remember visiting with your mother after your Dad died and she missed your Dad and she talked about how proud she was of you and her grandchildren. I will pray for you and your families.

Valerie
