Joseph J. “Joe” Quiter
Joseph J. Quiter, a long time Rochester resident, died at Charter House on Thursday, October 21, 2010 of natural causes. The body was donated to Mayo Anatomy Department for research. The memorial Mass will be at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 25, 2010 with the Rev. Harry Jewison officiating. Visitation will be a half hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at a later date.
Joe was born September 16, 1913 on a dairy farm near Albion, Nebraska and graduated from Albion High School in 1931. He remained on the farm until 1933 when he moved to Elmhurst Illinois and attended Bryan and Stratton Business College in Chicago. He then worked in the men’s clothing store in Elmhurst as a bookkeeper and clerk. He married Helen P. “Pat” O’Neill in Elmhurst on July 23, 1938. From 1940 through 1946, with time out to serve 2 1/2 years in the Army Air Corps Finance Department, he worked for the C.I.T. Credit Corporation in Milwaukee, the Twin Cities, back to Milwaukee and then Rochester where he was branch manager.
He left C.I.T in 1947 and started his public accounting practice in Rochester which was later known as Quiter, Younger and Swanson. He was active in various accounting associations and societies and was Enrolled to Practice Before the Internal Revenue Service. He was active in scouting at St. Francis Church and served on the parish Finance Committee for about 25 years. For several years after retirement he was active in the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, a past member of Toastmasters, the Exchange Club and the Elks.
Survivors include his wife, Pat, one daughter, Jane Connor (Jerry) of Sauk Rapids, MN, and two sons, John (Elaine) of Los Angeles and James (Karen) of Walnut Creek, California and eight grandchildren, Jennifer Connor, Jill Hedlund, Joel Connor, Jacquelyn Bacigalupi, Aron Quiter, Brian Quiter, Jeffrey Quiter, and Leslie Quiter; and one great grandchild, Connor
Bacigalupi. His parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
The family prefers memorials to the Charter House Benevolent Care Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.
