John V. Huyber

John Vincent Huyber, age 86, of Rochester and rural Wabasha, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

John was born on April 23, 1939, to Vincent and Florence (Slade) Huyber.  He attended Rochester High School and was active in the men’s choir and DeMolay International.  After graduating in 1957, he enlisted and served in the US Navy aboard the USS Hancock as an Electronics Specialist until 1961.  After his military service, he married his high school sweetheart, Sherry Duncanson on December 29, 1961.

John was an electrician and worked a couple of years for local contractors before joining his father’s business, H & H Electric, which had been started by John’s grandfather.  In 1973, John and his younger brother Steve purchased the business from their father.  John managed the contracting side of the business while Steve managed the retail portion of their store.  After retiring at age 62, he spent a majority of his time at the family cabin on the Mississippi River south of Wabasha.

As a Master Electrician, he was a jack of all trades and could install, repair, update or replace most anything from plumbing, HVAC, windows, doors, siding, motor engines, small appliances and most certainly, anything electrical.  He was always readily available and happy to lend assistance to family and friends on any project yet was quite reluctant to accept help on his own personal projects.  He kept his mind sharp by devising new ways to get things done by himself and took great satisfaction when the job was done.  He was fiercely independent and had his own unique ways.

John was a voracious reader and loved the works of Louis L’Amour as well books on US History and Military History.  He loved to play cribbage with anyone that wanted a game and without apology, would take every point that his opponent left on the table when counting their cards.  While his kids were growing up, he helped coach several of their teams and recorded countless hours of hockey game video for review by the team’s coaches.  He drove the family motor home, loaded with hockey families to many youth hockey tournaments all over the state.  He introduced his kids to the BWCA and spent many weeks there over the years, paddling and fishing with friends and family.  He also enjoyed snowmobiling well into his 70’s, always on Arctic Cats.

John was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and he will be missed greatly by his family and those that knew him.  In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, son John of Burnsville; daughter Beth (Howard) Driskell of Anchorage AK; son Todd of Oronoco; and son Mark of Rochester; grandchildren, Alex Huyber, Carly Huyber, Matthew Driskell, Caleb Driskell, Jack Huyber and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister Nancy Nelson; brother Steve; and daughter in law, Molly Huyber.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday December 27 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester.  Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m.  Burial will follow the service at Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Please consider a memorial to The American Heart Association or Disabled American Veterans.

Condolences

The family of John V. Huyber has received the following condolences.

I've known John since childhood when we would ice skate in his backyard.  Our parents both had cabins at "the River" where we explored & fished the backwaters. Our lives diverged, only meeting occasionally, but I have fond memories. John was hard working, creative, tenacious and independent. He will be missed
