John Martin Hendrickson

John Martin Hendrickson, 60 died February 28, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

John was born November 15, 1957 in Estherville, IA to E. J. (Jerry) Hendrickson and Annette M. (Martin) Hendrickson. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1976 and then attended Mankato State College where he graduated with a BA in Business Administration. After graduation, John moved to Colorado where he was a Territory Manager for the New Holland Company. In 1985, John returned to Estherville where he worked for Estherville Implement Company and Motor Inn. During this time he met Rita Lamkin whom he married on August 1, 1987. The couple welcomed four children, Tim, Luke, Monica, and Theresa into their lives. In 1995, the family moved to Rochester, MN where John spent the rest of his career working in the Insurance Industry, first for John Deere Insurance (later Sentry) and later for GMAC Insurance. He received numerous awards for business growth and development.

John was a valued member of the Church of St. John the Evangelist, serving regularly as a Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the Finance Committee. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity Restore and at Hope Lodge.

John was an avid and loving family man. He enthusiastically followed and supported his children in their many activities. He particularly enjoyed sharing time with them at the family home in Spirit Lake, IA. John loved boating, playing cards (especially bridge and cribbage) and manning the grill for large family dinners at the lake. He taught his children to ski and sail and was a thrilling boat driver for anyone who wanted to go tubing. Sitting on the deck enjoying a lake sunset with friends and family remains a highlight.

John is survived by his wife Rita; his children Tim (Chelsey), Luke (Laura), Monica and Theresa; his sisters Joan (Tom) Gronstal, Nancy Anderson and Janet (Scott Roos) Hendrickson; and his brothers-in-law, Mark (Cindy) Lamkin and Chuck Lamkin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, E.J. and Annette Hendrickson and his in-laws, Eddie and Margaret Lamkin.

John’s family requests memorials, in lieu of flowers, to be sent to the Church of St. John the Evangelist, or Spirit Lake, Iowa Protective Association.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, March 5, 2018 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Gerald Mahon officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Sunday, March 4, 2018 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Monday. Interment will be in St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery in Spirit Lake, IA.

Condolences

The family of John Martin Hendrickson has received the following condolences.

Dear Rita, My condolences on the death of your husband and now your brother. I remember you from Heelan days and know that you and your family are dear to my uncle, Father Al Grendler. I learned of  Chuck's death via an email from a college friend who worked with Chuck. She always spoke highly of Chuck and his abilities with understanding children who were in need. During this time of great loss I know that your faith will help you. I will think of you and your husband when I am at Spirit Lake, he was buried in such a lovely cemetery. Peace to you, Mary C McCarthy (I was in Mark's class at Heelan)
