John M. “Jack” Lawler

A Memorial Mass will be offered for John “Jack” Lawler at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Rochester.  Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mr. Lawler died on Friday, October 14, 2011, at his home in Rochester.  Jack’s wish was to be cremated.

Jack was born on July 7, 1955 in Rochester to Pat (Shandley) and Bob Lawler.  He attended St. Francis Catholic School where he was an altar boy, Boy Scout, and Post Bulletin carrier.  He graduated from Lourdes High School with the class of 1974.

Jack was a member of Carpenters Local Union 1382 and loved building The Gonda building, Riverside Elementary School and other numerous buildings in Rochester and the Midwest.  He lived his Irish heritage and was deeply saddened by losing his ability to contribute more to this world. Jack received the Carnegie Medal of Honor for saving Deanna Herber from drowning in the Zumbro River at Mayo Park, many years ago.  Jack’s earthly voice has been silenced, but his words and kind actions will live on through his children, who he truly loved.  He touched many lives and hearts, and his memory will live forever.

Jack married Nancy Rens of Rochester and they later divorced.  In February of 1983, Jack and Lori Skogen were married and later divorced. They had twins, John and Meghan Lawler, who survive him.  He is also survived by his daughter Ellen Van Kirk-Lawler and her mother Pat Tupper.

Jack truly missed his mom Pat Lawler, his brother Bill, and was deeply saddened by the death of his niece Amy Wentink, among numerous other family members and friends.

He will be deeply missed by his dad, Bob Lawler, Sr. of Rochester, kids John, Meghan and Elle, steps kids Jason Tupper and Jessica Tupper Moore and their families.  He also leaves behind by his brothers Bob (Paula) of Bemidji, Mark and Dave Lawler of northern Minnesota, sisters Patty (Dick) Lohner and Colleen (Ken) White of Colorado, Barb (Bill) Wentink of Rochester, and Mary Lynn (Mike) Marshall of California, his many nieces, nephews and cousins, his lifelong friends and friends of Bill W.

If you would like to send flowers in Jack’s memory, please make them sparse and natural, or make a gift to the Dorothy Day house in his memory.

Other memorials can be forwarded to his children through Macken Funeral Home.

Jack was a great guy! I remember him from St. Francis and Lourdes. I haven't seen him in years, but have a number of fond memories of my encounters with Jack.

I didn't know Jack well enough to call him friend but I knew who he was. I went to St.Francis when he was there, he was  a year ahead of me. Even then he seemed to be quite a personality and in the years since I would see him from time to time. Just by virtue of going to St Francis we all knew one another and he would acknowledged me for that My hope is that for those Jack left behind that you find it in your heart to celebrate his time on earth and remember only the good things that came from knowing him My. condolences to the family and friends of Jack Lawler.

My heart goes out to you all at this time of Jack's passing away.  What a good man he was with such a good heart.  You are all in my prayers, especially today.

                                                 Heartfelt sympathy,

                                                            Lois

Hi Lawler Family,

How ironic that I was just talking about Jack on Sunday with a girlfriend while we were hiking in the mountains. We were sharing stories of incredible dogs (1979-80's) and Jack had one of the best. I can't remember his name, but his adoration for Jack reflected Jack's adoration for life and his friends. We shared many young adult experiences together in both Minnesota and Montana. We had handfuls of outdoor mountain adventures and I can still hear his unbriddled laugh booming in the mtns. That laughter, put a smile in your core. Even though I have not seen Jack for decades he will always be remembered as a friend.

I am sorry to hear of his death.

Love to all of you!

Julie

Even though I haven't seen Jack for many years, I don't think anyone will ever forget him.

Pat, Elle, Meghan, and John,

We are so sorry to hear about Jack's passing. I hope that you all hold on to the good memories you shared with Jack and know that he is in a better place now. As difficult as this time is, family and friends are here to help you get through. Elle, I'll never forget your dad on the sidelines of the soccer field cheering you on. It was evident how much he cared for his kids. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you and know that you are all in our prayers. Love you!

To mom, Elle, John, Meghan, and Jessica-Through all of the good times and the bad, Jack has always maintained a virtuous thread to family. And even though it was hard at times, we did the same. Jack really loved and cared about all of us, as we did him. It was hard to see what a toll the past few months has taken on him. Now he is resting eternally with our father in heaven, and will be praising our Lord until we meet up with him again. It may seem to us like a lifetime before that happens. But when we see him next, to him it will be as if we were never really apart. His life is easy now, and there are no more tears, pain or worries for him. I pray we all have solace in knowing where he is and what he is doing. That the cares of this world are behind him, and that his legacy will live on through what we learned from him.

Mom, John, Meghan, Elle, and Jason, I love you all SO MUCH. What a ride we took with Jack huh!? Lots of laughs and tears, fun and struggles. We'll always be a family and we will ALWAYS take care of one another. God Bless your dad, may he find everlasting peace. Love, your daughter and sister, Jessica.

Bob and Family - I am so very sorry for your loss.  Jack was fun to visit with when he would come to Meadow Lakes and he always had a smile to share.  I will remember him fondly.

My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Love,

Colette
